2015 August hatch-a-long!!

700

Everyone is all fluffy and happy. Good legs and feet. A successful hatch. Whew! I can relax now. :yesss:

They are all adorable. Congrats

Hi all, We should be hatching August 29th, maybe the 30th. We have 28 in, but my husband cracked one already. Anyway, we are new to BYC even though we've been following for years and researching. Both of us grew up with chickens. My husband raised quite a few at a time on his own while he was a younger. My family raised about 100+ every year for the freezer. We're starting out simple, Barred Rock and RIR for the purpose of egg laying. Fingers crossed that we get quite a few hens. I took the pic without the sponge and had to move the thermometer, but essentially we're 8 days in now. Yippee!:yiipchick
Can't wait to see your progress. I Have eggs set to hatch on the 30th/31st so we should be expecting at the same time :)

I've got a SIlkie on 5 cochin eggs due to hatch on Aug 23rd! I haven't done this before, so I'm a little nervous and excited at the same time. Mom is separated from the flock in her own coop. She's in a brooder box about 3 inches off the ground. My plan is to keep the chicks and her together for about 5 weeks. This is the Silkies first time as well, hope she's a good mother, if not, I guess I'll have to be the Mom. ha ha!
I'm sure she will be:) I just got my first silkies this year. I can't wait until they go broody. Looking forward to reading your progress :)

Day 11... I have 17 Silkie eggs going strong. I had one quitter. I put my biggest eggs in a different incubator with lower humidity, their air cells were a bit small for day 7. I am so excited to see what comes out of those cute eggs!!

Sweet. What color silkies? Are they mixed? I love the color of paint silkies :). I'm gonna make a few this year. I have a White silkie rooster, a white silkie hen and a black silkie hen so seperating them and collecting eggs to hatch should be fun

Day 22 and I just checked on the remaining 4 eggs. The one little white egg that was rocking and rolling so much on Friday must have done some damage in there because it is dead in the shell.
The 3 brown eggs I was really hoping would produce something, I am pretty sure are also bad. One is "sloshy" in there and the other 2 look like they are at about 18 days instead of 22 and I can't see any movement. These brown eggs are difficult to see in but my flashlight is super bright and I can still see some veins but again no movement at all. So I am gonna give it another day and then float test them. Only thing I can think is that the humidity was too high for these last ones. The air cell looks small for that big of eggs and I had the humidity higher when the other chicks were hatching.

Lesson learned, don't put different hatch dates in the bator at the same time if you can help it. Bummer... I kind of want to try another batch but with the winters we get here in Michigan the chicks would be too young for outside in the cold and too big to keep in the house at that point. guess I wait until spring. On the up side.... I did get 6 beautiful little healthy chicks on my first hatch.
good luck to all of you in the "Hatch a Long" group.

They should be a variety of colors... so far from this breeder I have hatched a few black, a few paint, lavender and a few I haven't figured out yet. Do some of yours carry paint? It will be fun to hatch their eggs!

Didn't even know there was an actual paint gene. I thought it was as simple as mixing silkie colors lol. With a little research I realize I am mistaken. BUT there is hope, I saw a thread and this woman got started with her paint silkies by mixing a white silkie rooster with a black silkie hen like I will be so we'll see what happens I guess :)
