Another thought... I wonder if it was also a little shrink-wrapped? I say "wonder" because I'm not sure what the inner membrane looks like when they're proceeding along on their own. Is it white or is it translucent like after you moistened it? I honestly don't know...

It turns white around the external pip and if the zipping is slow enough the edges will get white as well, otherwise it will stay pretty clear. I am nosey and I pull the eggs and check progress way more often than I should, but so far it has not caused any true shrink wrapping, the little hatcher I use can hold humidity up around 85% if I add enough wet paper towels.

If you use a thin application of Trip antibiotic oint. from a q-tip instead of water you only have to do it once, it will stay clear.
