2015 Pacific Poultry Breeders Association Show NOW MODESTO

That's cool. I am planning to bring my 3 kids, so that's nice that there will be other kids there. My 8 year old is doing 4-h and he wants to try showing later in the year, so we are going to check it all out & see what it's like.

Anything in particular we should check out for him? We have (not) been to a show before.

This show has a whole section of junior activities. In the past, it has been in a separate building, but maybe at this facility it is in the main building? I'm not certain. There is a judging contest, an open book quiz on the APA standard, showmanship, and Avian Bowl. Showmanship requires preregistration and is quite competitive; the others you can sign up for on the spot. These are great activities for your kids or your 4-H group if you are only able to come for the day.

The sales area will be separate from the showing area and is worth checking out also.

Mostly there are a lot of birds to look at, and they will be categorized by class and breed. With little kids, you probably won't have time or energy to see all the birds, so it's good to prioritize - maybe there are breeds that you're especially interested in looking at. I use my cell phone camera to take "notes" of what birds I liked, any sellers that had interesting birds, etc. There's an exhibitor number on every cage card that can be used to trace contact information back to the exhibitor, if you want to make a connection, so often I take a picture of the bird and then a close up of the cage card.

If you have an APA or ABA standard, I suggest bringing it for reference.

There will also be vendors of various Stuff, of course, so if there's something poultry-related you need, you might find it here.

I'm hoping to attend aswell I'm a brand newbie so I'm kinda lost. I have a rooster I'm hoping to find a home for he's a silver araucana I live in the city so I can't keep him. Can anyone sale birds at the show?

Is he still available? And do you have any pullets or hens to go along with him? I may be interested.

It's a good show to go to. It will be interesting to see how the new location works out.

As far as buying in the sale barn, there are a lot of birds but not necessarily what any one person is looking for. If you are searching for a particular breed or variety, it may work out better to contact breeders of interest in advance. Some breeds are definitely better represented than others. Definitely take the time to inspect the birds for parasites before taking anything home... that was a problem last year.

If you buy, you get just a bird handed to you. It's your responsibility to feed and water and contain it once it's yours, so it's wise to bring an empty carrier, a little feed, and a water cup. Weather could be warm/sunny or not, so even if you're going right home it's good to be thinking about water (and most likely you'll want to hang out and look at other birds etc). Usually there will be a vendor selling cage cups. The sale barn may have cardboard boxes for sale but best to come prepared.

As far as prices, they are all over. You'll see some birds as low as $10 and some quite a bit more; it varies mostly on how willing the seller is to take the birds back home, as far as I can tell. Do your research ahead of time in terms of knowing your breed and what to look for if you want a show bird - there will be a range of quality. Bring cash and a cell phone, because yes, usually you'll need to call the seller. Cruise the room several times, because people will arrive later, people will refill the cages with additional birds, etc. Some birds that were in the show will be available for sale after the judging on Saturday, for pickup Sunday. If you go to buy, you'll want to be there Friday evening or early Saturday. All the action happens on Saturday, in terms of things to see and do.

I usually photograph sales cages of interesting birds, which will have a name and phone number, for future reference. The cell camera is a wonderful thing.

A local 4-H club usually sells food on Saturday for breakfast and lunch and it seems that will be continuing at the new location.

The sale barn (and the competition bird count) is usually bigger in years when it's a national meet, which is not this year. Still, it should be a fun show with plenty to see.

What time on Friday do you think would be best to look in case we want to buy? I saw on the schedule that there is a dinner for the exhibitors on Friday night so wondering when the best time would be to get a jump start =) Just in case there is something I can't live without =) But I know that the birds can't leave until sunday.

The best time Friday is to get there around 4 and watch what they put in. BTW: There is no selling of birds allowed outside of the sales area or the show itself. I believe you also have to be a member of the Club.( PPBA) to even have a sales cage.

I'm interested but can't guarantee that I will buy, so I don't want to ask you to bring them up just on my account. I'm very picky about personality and crow on roosters and would need to meet them before agreeing to buy.
Okie dokie. I'll see if I an get him crowing on video! :)

Is there a pre-sale thread for this show on BYC? There has been one for previous shows but I can't find one for 2015?
Thanks!
We could start one! I know lots of folks like to take this opportunity to meet, get eggs and birds from folks they don't often see from various parts of CA. Trades or non-show purchases could be off-site, perhaps?

Birds entered in the show cannot leave until Sunday, but sale barn chickens can leave as soon as they are sold.
