2015 Peafowl Hatching Support Group - Eggs and Chicks!

Pics
Caught my hen off her nest and she has 5 eggs. The 4 I had set none were veined, eggtopsy revealed none even began to visibly develop. I took a pic of the 1 that yolk managed to show the visible spot but I cannot tell if it's a bullseye or not.

Is it possible for the first 4 to be infertile and now her 5 she's sitting to be fertile? I was sad they weren't and with my pair to be of good age I hope I don't have fertility issues.

Yes, it is possible for the first 4 to be infertile and the more recent 5 to be fertile. However it would make me wonder, so I would be waiting until she has been sitting on them for about 12 days and then I would try to candle 1 or 2, just to see. If these 5 are infertile I would just take them one day when she is off the nest. This will get her back on track and she will lay another clutch that will hopefully be fertile. She obviously wants to be a momma and she could sit those eggs forever if they are not fertile.

Where is the photo of the yoke you took? i would think if one was fertile the rest would be what day are you on now?

They were mostly on day 13. Not the best of pics but here's what I took. I can see a slight outer ring but?? What do ya'll think?

Thanks. Yeah I have taken some of my own pics but of chicken eggs. These having been incubated as long as they had just as for what I would expect maybe eggs stored would show "faded" therefore lessening the viability. I don't know. Lol. The lighting was bad and I was cracking them into a hot skillet to feed back to the birds. And thought oh shoot I should see if I can see a bullseye!

I still haven't figured out how to handle my broody in the woods.

For as much trouble as I had finding her the spot she chose is only about 30 ft from the tree line which is about the same distance from the side of our deck.

I've been letting my LGD stay outside to help ensure her safety. Truth is I just am not sure how I want to handle it.

Can anyone help me out with advice?

Should I pen her where she sits?
Should I gather the eggs and incubate?
Do I get her, kennel her with the eggs? Will she continue to sit? Do I do that at night?

I know you all have opinions!! ;) send them my way!!

Thanks in advance!

We tried putting a pen up around a sitting hen many years ago, it upset her so much she quit sitting and would not go back.
We have also tried moving a hen with eggs and that also resulted in them refusing to sit any longer.
I would gather them, but I just never had any success doing anything else. I actually lost a sitting hen who drowned during a night of torrential rain and thunderstorms, so I am biased!

Thanks for the input. I remember reading about that happening to you.

Well this morning out of the blue as my DH were discussing her she flew straight up out of the woods throwing a fit and landed on the roof of the house!! I immediately went to her nest and saw no signs of anything and my dog was right with me and notta. I decided to grab the eggs and put them in another bator I had going just for the eggs in case that's what I would decide. I did candle them. I expect she's only been sitting for roughly 4 days. No signs of development but I set them anyway and marked the calendar. She's returned several times honking away searching.

Is she going to sit on an empty nest?

I saw her back out a few times but I think she's back out there. I need to go look in a bit.

If these don't show any signs of development within the week Im not going to k ow what to think!?!

My "broodiest" Peahen is an old Cameo BS and last year her eggs were not fertile, I pulled them and she made a fuss and then sat back down in her corner like they were still there. She stayed put for 2 days and I felt bad, so I took eggs out of my incubator and gave them to her one by one. She didn't like me being that close and hissed at me every time I reached out and placed an egg beside her, but then she would roll it under her with her beak. She hatched 6 nice little babies a week later and was a happy camper. She had lost eggs in the past and she never remained sitting for more than about 24 hours. It is such a tough decision and I don't envy you having to make it. I would just let her go and she will lay another clutch, it's early in the season. I would be worried as to why she spooked off the nest like that, that's not normal, takes a crowbar to get mine off when they sitting.
