I've never thought to weigh mine... I know they do that for emu eggs since you can't see inside, but most of the time you can see into pea eggs to tell development. I'm about to set a dozen or so, I could weigh them weekly and find out, if someone doesn't know offhand? I'd be interested to know the answer, so I might anyway

I'm pretty sure Kathy weighs hers' and has posted the info. before, I was just hoping to not have to go searching for it. I think it was 10-12%, but not positive at all. I decided to weigh mine for the first time this year and one of the first ones I set started at 107g and at 3 weeks it is 98g, I'm hoping it is on track.

Fascinating! Now I really want to weigh mine and see!

I have to look it up, but the number I remember aiming for was closer to 14%, I think, though last year I had a couple that lost 18% and they seemed to hatch better than the ones that lost only 14%. I look for the data on the eggs I tracked last year.

Sold three of my week-old chicks today, and made room for this out-of-order hatcher:

It was up on the turning rack still, and I only noticed because it was very vocal because it was stuck. I peeled all the stuck shell off of it and rinsed it off in warm water and let it dry on a heat pad next to me for a little while, until it could hold its head up. Looks like a little pied w/e chick!

I will look for the weight loss info on the eggs you sent me last year.

I have been weighing mine. Granted they were shipped so I'm sure I can add a .5g to their loss but here's what I have so far.
These were set late Monday 4/27.
Day 14 check weight date 5/12
#2 Set weight 110g Day 14 99g
#4 Set weight 126g Day 14 119g
#6 Set weight 131g Day 14 120g
#7 Set weight 132g Day 14 122g

I will be weighing again this week Tuesday 5/19 day 21.

I've tried time and again to compute these and I think they are not loosing enough weight. I've taken out the small amount of water I had which was keeping H% at about 33% hot and muggy out now it's steady at 40%

After weighing this week I may insert some unpopped popcorn to lower the humidity.

Hello Everyone,

I am hoping to find some answers here. I am very new at this. Last July we had a peahen fly into our yard and she had 4 baby peachicks. We took good care of them. They are now with the peahens original owner. He left mama peahen because she was acting like she was nesting. We noticed a month ago that she was sitting on 5 eggs. We are not sure if they are fertilized or not. There was a wild turkey that just happened to show up last month for a few weeks and plus her 3 male peacocks that were as big as she was but were only 8 months old. Not sure if they were to young to mate. The wild turkey is gone now. We found her nest and she's been on those eggs for over a month and still no chicks. What do we do at this point? Is the hatching period over? I read somewhere that it takes 28 days and she is probably going on 38 days. Do we remove the eggs? I am afraid to touch them and disturb her nest. How do we help momma peahen?
Thank you.

It sounds as though they are not fertile. If you are certain that it has been 38 days then they are not going to hatch. If you are not certain, I would advise stealing one and candling it in a dark closet, by this time you should see a dark egg with just a light air space and perhaps movement if it is alive. If you can see through the whole egg then it is unfertilized. If they are unfertilized just take them when she takes a food and water break. She can't count and she is doing what her hormones tell her to do, she could continue to sit indefinitely and that is not good for her health. She will be upset when they disappear and she may continue to sit for a couple days, but she will get up and get back to normal.
