. I'm pretty new to the chicken thing and wondering if anyone can tell me the breed and gender of this one. Almost looks like a copper maran hen but I'm not sure

Welcome to BYC and the Peafowl forum. Maybe @frenchblackcopper
can tell you if it's a Maran?

Since it was warm weather I also put them outside with a different mom chicken so they had uneven ground to walk on. The last 2 I was determined it wasn't going to happen to, and darned if they didn't jump a foot out of the brooder box and splay themselves on my laminate floor. :(

So, with the help of a lot of wet towels and quick movements we dove in to rescue the two that had hatched without losing much humidity at all. I wasn't particularly worried about the pied but the little white eye baby had a pretty splayed leg that I didn't want to let get any worse. I've never had a bird of any kind with a splayed leg at hatching so I admit I'm sitting here with it in my hand holding the leg in the appropriate position for the moment. Has anyone had to forge a splint for a splayed leg before and if so what did you use and how did you do it?
Here is how I did one:

The stuff I use is that first aid tape that's like paper.

i think I'm having a problem because this one's leg is splaying forward instead of to the side, which seems unusual. Do you think binding the legs like that will still help?

Hmmm... not sure. Perhaps @DylansMom , @frenchblackcopper or @AugeredIn will know.

I had one hatch out just like that a few minutes ago. Here is what we did; cut an old sock to make a tube, carefully put the chick inside and tucked the legs back where they should be and taped it snug. We will take it out in the morning and see if it is working, probably will need shoes next.
