2017 Groundhog Day Hatch-a-long!

Day eight today. I've got Gail Damerows Hatching and Brooding Your Own Chicks book out from the library and I've been looking at the day by day pictures. I'm pretty sure I've read the darn book cover to cover three times now. Lol. My mom is realizing letting me get an incubator was a bad idea. :lau
Atleast Im not alone in my chicken obsession disorder lol I actually candeled EACH and EVERY single day last time I incubated eggs, Im hoping Ill be better this time as a second time around mommy but I doubt it! I'm the same way I research everything 100xs!!! (I dont think its necessarily a bad thing)

Haha, I've managed to restrain myself from candling more than once....trying not to jinx myself here. Lol. I thought I'd kill the embryos if I did it every day.

I really want to own it myself, but the library is the cheap option. I'll just keep it checked out all year. When I have to return it, I'll just check it back out next week. :gig

Like i said it was my first time ever incubating eggs and im severely ocd!! I dont think candeling everyday can kill them, it didnt for me anyway, i think the real risk in doing that is dropping and breaking one, which i almost did a few times, when i set them on Monday i plan on only candeling on day 7 and 14 maybe just maybe the day of lockdown too, but thats it! I shall sit on my hands the rest of the time!!! Lol

Couple pics of my wellie, bcm, and legbar babies.

Up to 36 out. 6 more eggs pipped.

1 pipped in incubator I thought was goners.

Eventually you'll know everything in the book and you won't need it.

Hello Everyone!!! The last year of chicken keeping has been a hectic one for me!!! All sorts of ups and downs! I was going to join in on the NYE hal but my hens weren't laying well and I couldnt find any hatching eggs in time

BUT the girls finally picked back up enough for me to snag some spare ones for hatching.

I am planning to set my eggs in the incubator the night of the 23rd hoping for Valentines babies. So far I have a dozen idk what Ill have by then, not going to fill the incubator but thats ok, honestly I probly already have enough chickens lol! But we do have another coop set up now so Im excited and hoping for a better year of chicken keeping!!

I will be hatching my own production type rhode island reds, and this will be my first time using a incubator I didnt make-I even have an egg turner this time

So Im sure Ill be full of questions come next week, just wanted to join in and introduce myself.
Hello Teaton! I don't know if this is good or not, but my hens NEVER stopped laying! I am planning on buying an incubator that holds 27 eggs or so, and I am going to be setting 12 Ayam Cemani eggs, and hopefully a few of my own. But my rooster is getting older, and he had some problems with his legs a few months ago. So he can't mount the hens as easily, so that means poor fertility. And plus I have 26 hens, and he is a bantam- so he can't get around to everyone like he used to could. I guess I could try and just keep my fingers crossed

Here is a picture of my broody Silkie who was sitting on some eggs last year:

I had some nice wooden nests for her to sit in, but she completely refused and would only nest in this old cardboard box

She is such a stubborn broody.
