Lucifer is starting to get some copper on his breast. I really hope he doesn't turn out to be a jerk.

My advice is don’t make a pet out of him.
They seem to lose respect when people do that.
Be sure to walk through him and make him get out of your way when you’re moving around your yard and coop.
Insist that he give you about 10 feet of space.
That’s what a mature rooster would expect and demand.
The friendliness they show as chicks is really just lack of fear which often turns into orneriness later.
Testosterone basically turns them into morons.
Do you have older hens that can teach him manners?

I've had both good and bad roosters in the past. He won't stand a chance against me. Lol

I managed to snatch one in a mid air leap at my face once. Held him upside down as I went about my chores. He never tried me again, but would go after my kids. He went away :smack

I actually figured maybe thats why he was so bold today. Since she was laying and he didnt know what I wanted with them. It still doesn't excuse that he came after me. I originally wanted a rooster so we could breed and hopefully get a broody hen to hatch. Now I'm thinking maybe we will just order from a hatchery every other year instead. If we hatch our own we might be run rampant with cockerels. :barnie

On another note what's up with all the chicken screams lately? I know my pullet who is laying makes this screaming noise when she's laying but do other pullets make the same sound when they're about to lay but not actually laying yet? I heard it last night and again tonight.

I used to think it was the girl that was laying that was making all of the noise but after sneaking in to peek a couple times, I saw that it was one of the others standing nearby that was carrying on. Then when she went into the box, another would take over making noise. The one in the box was usually quiet, but not always.

Sometimes they get bent out of shape because they all want to use the same box.
Mine will stomp around complaining until the other hen is done even though there’s 3 other open nests
I saw Cricket lay an egg yesterday! I thought it was Dak but no! She was squatting. Is that normal? When I went out Lil Taco was in the other corner screaming. A little while after Cricket was done she went in to lay her egg. So I guess she was complaining. How funny.

My goodness it’s so much more peaceful around here with only Angus! :yesss:
What a relief.
I didn’t realize how chaotic things were until Loki was gone.

My advice to anyone starting out with chickens is to do your best to get sexed pullets only.
Look closely at your chicks to recognize any accidental cockerels.
Don’t get attached!
You don’t know what type of temperament he will end up with and may have to make some hard choices.

If you have all females and want a rooster, wait until all your females are laying!
Roosters terrify young pullets and a good rooster won’t even try breeding them until they’re laying or very close to it.
Look for a non-aggressive male about 2 years old.
Young cockerels are inexperienced and often just cause stress and chaos.
That’s not to say there aren’t exceptions but the odds are better with an older one.
Also consider a bantam rooster.
They’re much easier on the females in terms of breeding.

Ooh you better get nest boxes or she may just keep laying on the floor because she’s used to it!
I just use plastic bins like someone might use for washing dishes or something.

Kitty litter trays work too.
I’m thinking of getting 2 kitty trays with covers for broody hens with chicks.
I can put those on the floor.
They even have ones designed to fit in corners.

Sounds like Big Red was thinking bad thoughts.
I know how you feel.
Loki rushed me from behind this morning and I chased him off but he doesn’t run far.
It’s like he doesn’t respect me.
He regularly invades my space.
Angus doesn’t do any of this.
I tell them all the time that they better watch it because I don’t need any roosters :smack
This is a brilliant idea, I am so glad I've seen your post! I have two Rhode Island Reds aged 13/15 weeks so a little way to go before they start laying - the thing is they have a nesting compartment built into their hutch but they have taken to sleeping in it and won't use the part meant for sleeping other than to eat/drink ( as its where I put their food) they won't roost either, even free ranging in the garden with plenty of places to roost they snuggle up in the grass when having a nap, for what ever their reason they just won't roost although I've tried to encourage them to do so - tried putting them on the roost bars at night but they just jump off - tried adding roost bar in nesting area too, but still they insist on sleeping snuggled together on the floor - I don't mind at all if its what they want but I was concerned about when they start to lay but now thinking I'll copy your idea and put the boxes in the sleeping compartment so they can keep the nest compartment for sleeping if they choose to :)
