2018 Newbie Chat!

Elsa is a good example of chicks coloring changing. She is a slw, so I knew all along she would be white and black, but until she got her full adult feathers she was pretty solidly black!
Her wings barely had any white on them for the longest time. I was worried I got such bad genetics she just had very thick lacing. :p
And there is no better example at how drastically feathers change as chickens grow up than Kida. She turned from grey to gold!
@No More Empty Nest remember how you used to comment that Nalas wings looked like angels wings because they were so white? Now they're mostly tan! :)

On another note, Elsa, my little bottom of the pecking order remembered that she likes laps!

She used to be the most friendly then got kinda skittish when teenage Kida and everyone started picking on her a bit.
I'm glad everyone is calming down in their old age now. XD
Watching chickens grow up over the course of a year is like watching an entire lifespan in fast motion!

Belle is still very outgoing and friendly, and she is definitely top of the pecking order. She even bosses Kida around now! And I swear she is half the size of my other EEs! XD

Small but fierce!

Wow - These birds are magnificent! So beautiful, especially Elsa, - apart from pictures, I have only ever seen one SLW and although complete with the lace effect and very attractive, is no where near as beautiful as Elsa, she is stunning.
Belle is remarkable too, I've never seen such colouring before - the way her feathers start off dark on her head and lightens along up to her tail and her big beautiful eyes... I have never seen chicken eyes that big - is she rare? I haven't seen millions of chickens but I've seen a fair few over the years (I am 55) My late nana kept chickens as did most of her neighbours and over the course of my lifetime I have visited so many farms/holdings etc, and I have looked at more pictures than I'd be able to count and I have never before seen a chicken with eyes as big as hers, they are incredible.. your birds are beautiful, so glad you posted :)

I’m sure Roo will be buff.
My Australorps are easy because they’re all black.
No guessing there.
And I know what my PR, SPR and SS will look like but each SS has a different amount of white so that’s fun.
Right now the PRs and SPRs look the same except the partridge ones are a beautiful red brown color with black barring and the silver penciled are black and white with barring.
When they have their 3 month molt they’ll get their beautiful penciling.

The EE are the ones that are a mystery.
Because they’re really mixed breeds you never really know how they’ll end up looking until they get the adult feathers.
My Naked Necks were like that.
The only one who’s color I knew as a chick was my black one, Agatha.
The rest were a surprise.
Angus was a chipmunk pattern with yellow down and black stripes bordering a large brown stripe down the middle.
Here’s Angus as a young chick:

And here is Angus as a juvenile. He was sunbathing in the dust bath. Based on how he looks here I thought he was going to be barred! I didn’t know about the juvenile molt.

Here he is in the middle of his molt. You can see all the red-brown coming in. He had a lot of white on his bib neck feathers but it all came in brown later. The stripe on his head is gone here.

And here he is now. The white part on his wings is very recent. This molt takes a long time. I’d say 1.5 - 2 months.

I've often told my daughter stories you have shared with us about Angus and the rest of the crew (we both had a giggle about his nest choices he made for his girls) and I thought she might like to see these pictures so have just shown them to her - she says hes soooo cute! She really likes his colours and we both agree that the contrast of his colours and the way they blend in seamlessly is remarkable - absolutely love his colours and the way the green of his tail matches his colours so well - I've seen green tailed cockerels before and always looked out of place, like someone had just stuck them on but with Angus his tail not only matches but blends in - Angus is a gorgeous bird with a wonderful character and is one of my favourites on here along with Agatha and Emily. Just is a lovely way to brighten a dull day - so glad you posted these pictures :)

She is an Easter egger. I think her eyes look so big because she is just a smaller chicken. Kind of like how bantams features sometimes look bigger since they're smaller.
The coloring reminds me of Americauna (sp?) Which I'm sure a lot of EEs are mixed with to produce blue eggs.

Edit: she lays cute little blue eggs :)

Agatha is healing but she still has a long way to go.
I keep her in the dog crate on the deck throughout the day.
When the other birds go in to roost I take her and put her up there with them after spraying her wound.

Unfortunately she is getting increasingly frustrated with being confined!
She paces a lot and will carry on loudly until someone (even me) comes and sits by her.
Do any of you have ideas as to how to lower her stress level?
I can’t let her out because Angus will immediately breed her which I’m sure hurts and I don’t want her injury to be further complicated.
Plus I need to be able to catch her for treatment.
I thought about putting Emily in there with her but it would be pretty cramped.
And I can never catch Emily.
She might go in on her own but Agatha could also escape.
Ugh! :barnie
We tried to put her crate out on the lawn in the shade but she was even more agitated trying to get out.
And the Wyandottes harass her.
I really need to just be rid of them but I think my friend is still sick.

my husband and I went out today to get new phones. the store didnt open when we thought it did so we went to tsc to get dog food. well...we didnt get phones...instead we came home with chicks XD so here I am a new chick owner.
Yay! Welcome to BYC. :frow
There’s a wealth of information on this site and lots of people who love poultry.
Chicks are way better than phones.
But phones (and computers) let you share pics of your chicks!
Also, be aware that TSC employees often know very little about breeds or chickens in general sometimes.
The one in my town isn’t too bad because the some of the employees have their own birds.

So what did you get? :clap
Have you had chickens before?
