2018 Newbie Chat!

one hen attacked and pecked the baby chick, I took it then she seemed interested again so I put the chick down and when she came at it again I knew she would not be a good momma hen. I put the chick under Henny Penny with the other chick. Henny penny woke up and blinked with surprise when the two chick started peeping happy to be together again.one hen attacked and pecked the baby chick, I took it then she seemed interested again so I put the chick down and when she came at it again I knew she would not be a good momma hen. It is so cute she lets them nibble her comb jump on her back and slide down, when she is tired of them hopping on her back she leans lifts her wing and the slide off and land under her wing, then she purrs and the quiet down. so sweet she is an awesome mom.
Maybe the hen who attacked might do better if she hatches an egg herself?

Been off this thread for a few days, had our eggs hatch!

Our 14 month old Cochin (big foot) went broody, rather then stopping her, I set some eggs under her. I had snuck 5 under her and tucked her into the isolation box. It’s on the floor under the nest boxes. 2’x4’ about 2’ tall made of HC. Well Big foot pushed out one egg and 3 more where not alive at hatch day. We where left with one polish/gold laced Wyandotte cross chick. It’s now 18 hours old and Moma seams to be doing good! Funny part is Dad is only 26 weeks! I have a couple pictures, they are kinda grainy though.

I saw this with Pedro and Jellybean but wasn't sure about Roo because Roo is already the colour of her parents only a little lighter, - saw it with the drakes too but Midnight and Aurora are still the same colour they were as ducklings but mostly have their adult feathers now, so I had just assumed it depended on the breed - obviously I now know this isn't the case and I'm thinking perhaps Roo might darken with age, Tis exciting either way.
Would love to see updated pics of your flocks - I don't know about anyone else but I love seeing pictures of peoples flocks/coups/pets, as well as peoples stories etc, goes a long way to brightening a day :)
I’m sure Roo will be buff.
My Australorps are easy because they’re all black.
No guessing there.
And I know what my PR, SPR and SS will look like but each SS has a different amount of white so that’s fun.
Right now the PRs and SPRs look the same except the partridge ones are a beautiful red brown color with black barring and the silver penciled are black and white with barring.
When they have their 3 month molt they’ll get their beautiful penciling.

The EE are the ones that are a mystery.
Because they’re really mixed breeds you never really know how they’ll end up looking until they get the adult feathers.
My Naked Necks were like that.
The only one who’s color I knew as a chick was my black one, Agatha.
The rest were a surprise.
Angus was a chipmunk pattern with yellow down and black stripes bordering a large brown stripe down the middle.
Here’s Angus as a young chick:

And here is Angus as a juvenile. He was sunbathing in the dust bath. Based on how he looks here I thought he was going to be barred! I didn’t know about the juvenile molt.

Here he is in the middle of his molt. You can see all the red-brown coming in. He had a lot of white on his bib neck feathers but it all came in brown later. The stripe on his head is gone here.

And here he is now. The white part on his wings is very recent. This molt takes a long time. I’d say 1.5 - 2 months.

So Sunday we put our 6 girls up early and Monday evening we found 7 eggs. I'm not sure if someone laid late Sunday or what but it surprised us. The next day we got another 5. So one dozen in 2 days it was a record for us. Yesterday my husband found 6 and today I've collected 2 so far but cricket was laying as I went out and I'm not sure how many she is sitting on. Someone suggested cheesecake a while back and I've decided to make one tomorrow! If only my chickens laid cream cheese too.
