2018 Newbie Chat!

I’ve seperated my lavender Orpington Jacaranda from the group, after reintroducing Wally she started cannabalisticly plucking his head feathers out. By the time I noticed he was almost bald again.
:he:barnie:rant
I’m going to do one of three things. Rehome her, cull her, or build a chicken tractor and move a few bully hens with her from my big coop. DH is going the love the third option (heavy sarcasm, DH is sick of building chicken related things)! Also, I have another broody, who I’m breaking in my rabbit hutch. This time it’s an Australorp thank gosh. I think I’d start pulling my hair out if Rosewood went broody again.
Just curious, how come Wally lets her get away with it and doesn't put her in her place? I know hens can be vicious but a rooster can do a ton more damage to a hen than a hen could to a rooster so I'm just curious why he lets her get away with it?

I’m honestly not sure. Most of my Ameraucana don’t have muffs or beards. They are also getting their necks plucked. So she’s going to town on all of them. Im assuming she doesn’t deal with confinement well. I’m going to try a pine tar of sorts on the bare patches tomorrow to help decrease this problem hopefully.

This might sound crazy but maybe he likes it? My mum has a male Cockatiel he is now 14yrs old and has been plucking himself bare since he was a chick, when a chick my mum tried all the anti plucking products but nothing worked so she took him to an exotic pets vet (very expensive) who told her there is nothing could be done about it because he likes the feel of the plucking more than he dislikes the taste of the anti plucking! She tried everything, from changing his environment/cage/girlfriend/amount of females/males and loads more but the vet is right 14yrs on and he is still bald and plucks any feather that dares to appear lol - he never ever plucked any others though, only himself

So I took the chicks out for about an hour today in their chick pen. They had shade and water but it was 93 degrees out. When it was time to come in, I opened the pen door and everyone ran up to me except Candice, who was lying in the corner - looked like she was brooding. She looks hurt or sick. She's usually the most active but was just lying in my hand. Her legs and wings move normally. I don't see anything obviously wrong. Once we got inside she had two stools that were almost just water. I mixed up some electrolyte water and put it in the brooder. Candice was walking around and ate a little, but is now lying down again with her eyes closed. She was totally fine and then she wasn't. I didn't see anything happen but there are red ants in the yard. Did she get overheated? Did she get bitten by something? What can I do? The other chicks are acting completely normal.View attachment 1540424
Ohhh dear :( I hope all is well and your little one returns back to good health soon

Great news, my cousin is flying down in two weeks from Anchorage, AK to pick up Jackie my lavender Orpington. She’s taking one of my Barred Rocks as well to keep her company and make for an easier transition with her flock. She was going to get chicks this spring but fell in love with Jackie, she named the Barred Rock Betty White. I currently have them both together to help them bond before the transition! She knows of Jackie’s feather picking issue but doesn’t care. She has a small flock that gets to free range all day. Best outcome for everyone!
