2018 Newbie Chat!

Same here, the older they get the worse they get. So far had a quite peaceful day a few bits of chasing but on the whole everyone just getting on with doing their own thing. Winds have died down which seems to have made a difference so maybe it's a mixture of several stress factors or maybe they are just turning into cranky old women lol

Mine had gotten better and now they are going in reverse. I know when they are outside and squabble the dogs stop it--from outside of the run. The dogs do not like when they cry. A few of the babies are quite bold, so the older ones may be meetingtrir match.

I do not mind little pecks, but when feathers are being pulled I draw the line. Geez, Prince doesn't even pull feathers when mating.

I also think that confidence level plays a role. Rose the EE is pretty confident and they start to mess with her and she moves out of theway, but doesn't cry like the other ones. The crying is making it worse. How do you teach a chicken confidence?

Today they were picking on Blanche. I pulled her out for about 15 minutes and just had her in my lap petting her--tgen she "roosted" on my arm

Just a thought hun but do you think they maybe getting nervous or stressed about the new chicks you have - like extra mouths to feed more competition for food, space, that kind of thingand perhaps are feeling the need to reaffirm their positions in the flock?

Could be. The chicks were next to where they are and I moved them yesterday. The silly things don't need to worry about food...lol

Dorothy has settled nicely in her playpen for now.

It may even be spring is in the air. For the first time in months all the roosters were crowing in the neighborhood today. I imagine it will be like that until about JUNE--then they all quiet down.

Awwww, so glad Dorothy has settled, comfortability goes a long way in helping recovery - glad she's recovering from her ordeal - bless her

Iwonder if bitter Apple spray would deter the pecking? It's used for dogs to not chew on stuff. I've gotten a little bit in my mouth when spraying and it's not pleasant..

Help

@ChooksNQuilts @PNW_Peepers any idea on breeds?

Meanwhile I'm thinking I got an austerlaup(so?) and not a jersey giant . I say this because none of them are really that much bigger them the other and I think a jersey giant would be at this age.

I will be taking pictures to identify what I got...
You can tell by their foot color. Although I don’t think it shows well until they’re teenagers or so.
Jersey Giant = yellow bottom of the foot
Australorp = pinkish white foot bottom

That’s how I knew Charlotte was a JG.
Her feet are bright mustard yellow lol.

Google Meyer Hatchery Chick Identification Tool.
Follow the link to their website and look for the breeds you have.
It’s very helpful.
Sapphire Gem won’t be on there because it’s a specific breed offered by certain hatcheries only (Hoover is one).
Australorp chicks are black and white.
In fact most black breeds have chicks that are black and white.

None of them look like jerseys. The one you’ve suspected is a jersey looks like an Olive Egger to me. I have no clue on sapphire gem chicks I’ve never seen them in person. Jerseys are all black, with white patches as chicks. Very similar to Australorps. I’ll take some pictures of my jerseys tomorrow for you.

I do have the one withthe white patches and I thought that was the Oliver egger. I am pretty sure the gray one is the sapphire gem. So the one with the white chest is a ?????

The one in the front
