2018 Newbie Chat!

I shared photos of my bantam chicks so now I’ll share some of my standard teenagers.

Here’s my buff Orpington whom I’ve named Buffy. When I’ve heard people describe Orpingtons and how friendly they are I realize now that I underestimated just how friendly.

And this is my favorite, my girl Shadow.
She’s one of two Barred Rocks I have and she loves me. She always comes to me and waits for me to pick her up and let her sit on my arm.

My second BR is pretty friendly and mellow too. Just not seeking me out like Shadow. I don’t have a name for her yet.

I’ve named my two EEs, Ginger and Mary Anne.
Ginger was the light chipmunk “blond” colored chick.
She’s feathering out lighter than Mary Anne but their juvenile feathers look sort of similar right now.
I figure they’ll look different as adults since they were so different as chicks.
Ginger: she has a beard and muffs and green legs.

Here she’s being photo bombed by one of my black sex links (BSL).

It was more difficult to get photos of Mary Anne. She is the dark chipmunk chick that was so terrified of me.
She’s still scared of me but not quite as bad. She has a brown body with much less red than Ginger. Her legs are much darker.

My two BSLs are the smallest and youngest of my LF chicks.
They have feathered out extremely slowly. To the point that I find it odd. I wonder if other BSL have similar issues.

They started sleeping in the big coop last night. And they were outside foraging in the yard all day today.
They’re doing really good.

Awwwwww such beauties! And what great shots!
You have very handsome boys - out of curiosity, are you planning to keep any of your boys or will you be rehoming?
All boys will be staying.
I got the bantams knowing there would probably be boys but that’s what I wanted.
I still want roosters; I just want bantams so they aren’t human aggressive and they’re easier on the hens feathers, etc.
I will have Oliver and three bantam boys.
I’ve named the little porcelain D’Uccle, Jack. He’s already trying to crow at 7 weeks.
I adore him!
Then I’ll also have two bantam Cochin cockerels, a buff and a mottled.
All three will have access to all the girls in the big coop and prefab bantam coop.

And of course Oliver is in his own area of the property with 7 girls of his own.

Wow, sounds wonderful - just thinking of when I first joined this forum and how small your flock was and how much it has grown now! Wonderful :clap

I had the little ones out all day and decided to leave them out in the coop. They cried for an hour--I coukdng listen to them, it was so sad. I brought the ducks out and they were happy. They went right into their house and we're waiting for me to shut the door. They did not realize the pool had water in it.

I gave little one a feather cut. I can see her eyes again. She has some wild feathers on that little head.

It's almost 11pm. I have been up since 4 and literally just sat down. I had to work this morning then I came home and bundle all the tree branches that fell, so they can be picked up. 7 hours of bundling. There was a lot of branches. Now my arms are itchy. I grilled some burgers. I went to turn the grill on and nothing. I was already freaking out about not having a grill, then I started googling stuff. All it was was the battery in the igniter--thankfully.
Wow hun, that s a lot of work and a lot of hours, you must be exhausted! Glad it was only a flat battery, nothing worse than being hungry and your appliance not working especially after all that work.

Such beauties! Love that you have yourself on the pics too - wish I could meet you and your flocks in person -
Showed my daughter the pics of your babes first day out, me saying how cute they are, my daughter replies "Look at that grass!" I said I know it's lovely but look at the little chickens on their first day out - my daughter said "I am but I can't take my eyes off that grass, it's so green - I want their grass" I said I'd settle for any grass at this point lol - a lot of our grass got burned in last summer's drought, then when we had the continuous rain during autumn a lot got ruined and turned to mush then the ducks and chickens ( ducks mostly) destroyed the rest. We've started our first patch of re-seeding, I keep looking everyday for signs of life and when we spot a shoot we run around cheering lol.
Amazing how fast your chickens are growing, and all such beautiful colours and markings - are these the colours they will stay now or will their colours change more?
Your photo bomb pic is priceless! With the right caption that would make a great meme lol

It would be fun if we could all meet one day.
Thank you for the compliments on the grass lol.
We’ve had a lot of rain this spring so that definitely helps.
We don’t have a sprinkler system on our property so all summer we have to drag 100 foot hoses around with the sprinklers to water it.
It’s an all day job!
And it’s a good thing DH is retired because otherwise it would’ve died the first year we were here.
It’s a lot to mow also. We had to buy a ride on mower for it.
I’ve thought about putting in more flowers because although we’d have to water them we wouldn’t have to mow them.
I hope your grass grows well soon!

All the chicks in the photos, except for the “broody babies”, are juveniles now so they will go through a molt in about a month or two and grow in their adult feathers.
Buffy will look much the same as will the Barred Rocks.
The EEs are the ones that could change a lot. It’s hard to say for them but the surprise is part of the fun of EEs.
The two Black Sex Links (BSL) will still be mostly black as adults but they will have some red leakage on the feathers of their head, neck and/or chest.
Some BSLs have a lot of red and some have very little.
I hope they’re different so I can tell them apart.

Happy Easter to All!!

The little ones did fine over night. They are happily playing in the run--climbing on everything. They are smart enough to go in the coop to get in the shade. It's a beautiful day here. Got some mulch down, changed the flood lights(so I can see the raccoons)--that was fun--2 stories up.

Got some pics of them

Beautiful girls!
I love the colors on your Polish.
Your EEs look so much like mine!
It’ll be very interesting to see if they feather out similarly.

I don't envy you having to pull that much hose around! You and your DH must be exhausted by the end of the day - guess it's one way to keep fit lol.
Certainly would be fun if we all could meet some day, I doubt it will happen but I never say never as no one knows what the future may bring, would be great if it happens.
I am excited about seeing what colours your EE's turn out to be and I especially like the sound of red. Pedro was our biggest surprise because she was so dark for the longest time and we thought she'd be black but she turned out to be majority red with black tail and markings, she has a green tinted sheen to her feathers which shows up mostly in sunshine, I read this is a feature of the original Rhode Island Reds so I'm guessing she has some RIR in her after all but what other breeds she is mixed with is anyone's guess lol.
Just wanted to mention that Roo got on my lap for the first time ever recently and she even let me stroke her which is a first, she hasn't been back on my lap since but I'm hoping she will do so again.

Great pics of your gorgeous girls, they all are so beautiful and your Polish is sooo cute!
Great to hear they've settled down so well, especially them having cried for an hour yesterday - can see they are very happy too.
