We have ten total so if we do have 4 I don't know if they could live in peace with only 6 hens. My husband does the culling and I helped after when they didn't look like my pets anymore. It was easier that way. He said he did have a hard time doing it tho. We wouldn't tolerate an aggressive bird at all. I have two boys 7 and 9 and another on the way due in July. How many roos do you plan to keep? We are in a rural area with tons of predators so I think maybe the best 2 in case something happened to one.

I have one roo to two hens (eight or nine weeks old, but I'm fairly certain I have a male since the development of crown and waddles plus the "rounding up"). If he is indeed a roo, and ends up being aggressive, I will turn him into stew very quickly.

I have a 2yr old son and will not tolerate an aggressive rooster. He is sweet for now, but if that changes I will do it myself. My fiance and I do not want that to be the case, but family first, and animals unfortunately come second.

Edit: we love in s rural area and it is hard to find anyone who wants a rooster

We’ in a small rural town but we live outside the city limits so there’s no restrictions on roos or numbers.
I currently have a bantam Brahma roo and I’m keeping my bantam Cochin chick too.
So that’s 2 right there.
There’s one of my NN that I’ve become attached to and I’m really hoping it’s not a roo but I’m not sure. :fl
The reason I became attached is because it is attached to me.
It always looks for me and seems to like me. It has even done the “where are you?” chirping when I leave the garage lol.
I know cockerel chicks will often be the friendliest and boldest ones. :barnie
This chick also has unusual and pretty colors. :love
I’m not attached to the other ones except a little pullet with a problem with a huge crop and the 2 bantams.
I want a little flock of bantams so I’ll always planned on keeping them.
I guess I’ll end up with three roos?Hopefully just the two bantams though.
So idk...my husband doesn’t want a bunch of crowing roosters but I told him the dominant roo won’t let the others crow.
It’s hard to raise something from a baby and not be attached. I’m a nurturer.
One thing I’ve learned is...handle them as little as possible if there’s a chance you’ll end up eating them. :hmm
But I’m pretty sure I want to avoid straight runs going forward.

I hope your guy turns out good and not aggressive.
He’ll need more hens though or those two will get pretty torn up from overbreeding.
For large fowl breeds they say 8-10 hens per roo. And even then they’ll often have favorites.
I absolutely agree with you about aggression especially with children involved.
If any of mine turned out aggressive, my feelings will change.
I do not like aggressive animals of any kind.

Our BO and SS are the friendliest and boldest. They're our favorites at the moment so we really hope if they're roos they have good temperaments. We live within city limits but everyone around us has chickens, ducks, goats, and sheep. I think the city is pretty lax about keeping code up. Lol. It's a population of about 205 here. And the ones with chickens do have roosters in their flock too.

:highfive: Looks like you have it made lol! :yesss:

One of my NNs has a crop problem.
I’m sad because I can’t seem to fix it.
I’m pretty sure it’s a pullet too.
She’s totally sweet.
I posted about it two weeks ago but everyone said it’s just full, it’ll go down.
It did, but only twice and it was huge again in no time.
It’s been like this for almost the whole two weeks now.
She’s been leaking water out of her mouth now too.
Her neck is always wet.
I’ve tried carefully regurgitating her and it’s helped but only for a short time.
