Oh hey we are getting chicks the same week July 9th from the same place Meyer! Neato! Nothing too fancy for me but i'm getting some iv'e never had speckled sussex and buff brahma and a couple of old favoriates a dominique "never raised one from a chick" and a faverolles to add some new blood. :) Forgetting my manners! Hello again newbies, hope your chicken adventures are still going good!
Guys I ordered more chicks!!:ya:ya
I know I have to get more females especially if I'm keeping all the boys.
I was looking at Meyer Hatchery's website and I saw they had a few Silver Penciled Rocks available! :love
I was excited because this breed had been sold out for months. They only have them for one hatch date!
Unfortunately they only allow you to order ONE!:hit
They consider them "rare"...
So I ordered the 1 but because the other breeds I wanted weren't available on the same dates I had to split my order.
On July 9th, I have 1 SPR (silver penciled rock), 2 BA (black australorp), & 3 PR (partridge rocks) coming.
On July 16th, I have 1 BA, 2 EE & 3 SS.
So I will have to introduce the chicks as they will be a week apart in age. But I've read about it here on BYC and people have been successful at it.

Oh I SO hope they all arrive alive and healthy!! :fl:fl:fl

Yay! I've heard so many good things about speckled sussex that I had to get some.
I had considered Faverolles but I've heard they're very delicate chicks.
I'm already a little worried since my orders are small (6 chicks each) but I hope since I'm ordering during summer it'll help.

Me too! Iv'e been coveting a speckled sussex ever since I started watching the hen cam on youtube. That lady has the most beautiful fat speckled hen! Faverolles aren't that delicate as babies, if you decided you wanted any warm weather would be the best time. That's the only thing iv'e noticed, even home hatched babies get cold a little faster than alot of breeds. I'm only getting 4 total so fingers crossed for our little boxes of babies!:fl

Yes I know! Such small orders. It’s hard not to worry.
Please post when you get yours and share with us on this thread as they grow!
I know we’d all love to see.

Always fun with more chick around!

Our newest batch at just over 2 weeks went outside tonight! At 3 days they where not using heat in our garage, and after 7 I took the heat plate right out as they barley used it. Now a week later out to the grow out coop! Hooping to let them into the run after a few days or a week.

The meaties are growing like weeds and eating all they see. Both there daily rations and all the weeds the tractor can provide. I might need to start moving them twice a day! 4 weeks old and 8 to go.... it’s a busy sommer with chickens!

Well after work yesterday I moved the electric fence to the grow out pen. Also added 3’ of chicken wire to the inside of the pen. I left my German friend in his kennel only 10 feet from the coop/pen. I left the door to the run open and did other yard chores. A few minutes later I found them all exploring! I left them In the coop today and will continue to until the weekend when I’m home all day. So far so good!

Also one of my year old hens has not left the nest in about 30 hours... hoping she has gone broody.

I am so confused about my two roosters. Every time I think about the situation I want to go where I bought them and just give them hell. I really hate that roosters seem to be so disposable. I'm like addicted to watching them. They are amazing. So this is the long story short..

I buy 4 girls, 2 turn out to be boys. I know nothing about chickens at this point and I was in rooster denial for a while. They kept insisting I didn't have roosters(where I bought them) and I keep getting more attached. I find a chicken rescue as plan b. I put them outside and they fought one time, I decide on they are both going. Catch them, call rescue and they can't take themfor a couple weeks, out they come. Then I can't decide between the two. Then the leg horn goes completely hormonal. Then I devide he is going to go. Then someone posted a picture of a hen that was raw from over mating. So my last thought as of this morning is to make a 5x5 area just for the two roosters. That way I can keep them and the girls can not be tortured. I would like to move fast but I have to wait to catch up financially here(the last enclosure was not as inexpensive as I thought. But a bigger issue arose...when the girls squeal the dogs go nuts and one redirected today--caught that one time. By the time I got outside I had one boy and one girl in with the ducks, then the duck thought oh look a girl-- and we all know what he attempted...Never a dull moment--never!

Day three of the Little’s being out in the coop/run with everyone else. Magnolia is the only bully this time. They spend most of their days in the coop, venturing out only when safe. Rosewood is in the garage in a dog crate, she’s laying still but extremely broody. I’m putting her out this evening to see where she wants to sleep. Wally was showing my 2/5 babies the nesting boxes today! Such a good cockerel he’s turning out to be.

My little chick is 2 weeks old now and doing very well! We have coffee on the deck together every morning and take a walk around the yard. He never strays too far from me. How old before I can tell if it's a he/she? He is a bantam...or maybe bantam/Auracana. I have 2 free ranging roosters .
