2018 Newbie Chat!

Pics
It was almost 100 today. Mine actually did go into the water in the pan. I was flicking water at them as the ducks were swimming and they liked that too. Once outside I think I'm going to put ice cubes in the shallow dishes, a slower release. I saw someone freeze corn in a muffin pan and give it. I might have to get more water containers. I have a 2.5 gallon one.

It's going to be just as hot today. I go out, do one section, come in, get cool, go back out. I have 3 more sections plus the gate to wire. My hands are all cut up and sore. I keep thinking this has to be done right, no room for error. Then I hear Sir Duke crowing and Prince trying, I know all this blood(literally, sweat, and tears is worth it.

Hi everyone...

Newbie here. Just recieved our first 6 babies and hoping we are doing something right. We bought a small coop from sams but will be extending it to include a walk in area for a play yard and more room for these guys. Im mostly worried that i have some roosters which arent allowed at all. I know I have at least 1 but hoping thats it. Figuring out chicken math and then also all the different types has my head spinning but i suppose we will get it soon or a later. I also am paranoid about leaving them in their coop once they are older. We all have a favorite chicken and will be so sad if something gets any of them.

Do you have pics of the chickies?? What kind did you get?

I ended up with a rooster, they aren't allowed here either. Luckily I posted him on Facebook and found a friend of a friend outside the city who needed a rooster for her flock of 10 hens.

So far it only looks like you have one cockerel. The Barred Plymouth Rock is definitely a boy, everyone else looks like a pullet to me! Congrats on your babies and welcome!

@BBZZZZTT Thats so warm, I’m glad your girls are doing okay. Hopefully it cools down here soon for you guys. We haven’t seen rain in almost three weeks, normally it doesn’t stop raining until June. Does your coop have electrical wired to it? I wish mine did, I’d hook up a fan for them.

We’re in the low to mid 80s here.
We’re blessed with a property that has several large tall trees to provide shade in some part of our yard throughout the day. Honestly the trees were part of what sold me on the place after going through two summers here without any shade.
There’s also a large bush the chooks like to lounge under.
And many different types of flowers that they forage underneath.
As the summer moves on I’ll probably be doing a lot of the things you guys are.

I need to put the little kiddie pool out so they get used to seeing it and will actually use it when the time comes.

Thank God for cockerels lol!
If it wasn’t for their natural inclination toward boldness and investigating everything, I don’t think my littles would be as used to a lot of things that they are now.

I’ve realized that as their keepers we are their “mothers”.
I got my chicks used to a lot of things very early in the brooder.
I gave them plugs of sod, little roosts, a small ramp going up to a little box of dirt for a dust bath.
I found live insects for them to eat and hand fed them many different things so they knew it was food.
Contrast that with my newest addition, Pippin...she doesn’t even eat grass. Doesn’t seem to know what it is.
She wouldn’t go near the ramp to the coop but thankfully after only 5 days she’s a pro!
She’s very afraid of being handled but then again so are Agatha, Emily & my unnamed cockerel.
Frodo doesn’t really like it but he submits to it.
Silkie is kinda the same.

Name ideas for my unnamed boy!!

Guys can you help me? I’m struggling with a name for him.
Nothing seems to fit.
I had no problem with finding names for Conan, Loki, Agatha, Emily, Frodo & Pippin.
I’ve had a hard time with Silkie and basically that is her name...Silkie.

I was thinking maybe Angus?
Idk...:barnie

He’s on the bottom of the pecking order amongst the boys. He’s skittish of me but not terrified. He’s never shown a lot of aggression but does chest bump and spar with Conan and Loki. He’s got beautiful slate bluish legs. He’s the one I’ll probably end up keeping.
