2018 Newbie Chat!

From everything I’ve read on BYC, you have to go into the coop after it’s dark.
Like with a flashlight.
Pick them up and put them on the roosts.
After dark chickens won’t move from their spot unless they have to.
Do this for several nights and they should get the hang of it.
Even if they don’t it’s not harmful to them.
Hi, I hope you don't mind but I wanted to share this little story with you and @Kat2141 - last night when I checked on the girls I found one hen (Pedro) fast asleep on the roost bar and the other (Jellybean) fast asleep on the hutch floor, tonight when I checked I found Jellybean yet again fast asleep on the hutch floor but with Pedro fast asleep standing on Jellybean's back! Was such a comical sight, made me laugh - crazy birds and their antics lol.

I just came across a video on YouTube about relocating raccoons, apparently if taken far enough they can't find their way back - given that you don't want to harm them, could this not be an option?
In much of the US it’s illegal to relocate wildlife.
They often get killed by resident wildlife or starve plus they end up becoming some other persons problem.

Yeah, on the videos I watched each trapper said they have to get permission first, although in different states, the type of places they took them to where very similar, and each said the raccoons would thrive, so I wonder if there are designated places. Just feel so sorry for those who have so many problems with raccoons, I got admit though raccoons have the cutest faces, and some say they make great pets - I guess its the same with most things though, they are hungry and need to eat.

I just had to run outside to check on the birds, for some reason the ducks were making a commotion and seem to be very unsettled tonight, can still hear them clomping around in their hutch - I live in a bungalow and their pen is quite close to my bedroom window so its easy to hear them - I've had a good thorough look around and there isn't anything at all out there but there is a wind picking up so I'm wondering if it is spooking them.

Found the problem! Idiot here hadn't bolted one of the hutch doors properly and one of the drakes had fallen out, he isn't hurt or anything, the hutch is only a couple of inches off the ground - I have a sheet draped over the front of their hutch to stop the lights from the bungalow disturbing them, I hadn't thought to look behind it the first time I looked because I could clearly see there was nothing out there but I did this time because I wanted to look in to see if I could figure out what was upsetting them - I'm guessing he must of lent against the door and when it opened he fell out, then for what ever reason the door rebounded back shut again so he couldn't get back in. He got back in as soon as I opened the door and they all settled down very quickly. I'm usually really good at double checking the doors are shut properly, but I think I got distracted at seeing Pedro on Jellybeans back - I feel awful about it, poor Jughead was so scared and the others so upset that he couldn't get back in - lesson learned though, from now on I'll be extra careful.

You need to take your camera with you when you go to the coop. Sounds like you could get some good ones.
