Omg! My white leghorn snowy angel laid her first egg!! my first egg for my first flock. I only had to wait 17 weeks ;-)

Now just waiting on the other 9!

Yay! First eggs are the best.
I’m anxiously waiting for my NN pullets to start.
They’re 21 weeks.

Ooh Anna if you can get Light Sussex go for it! They’re lovely and I’d love to have some. They’re harder to find here than the Speckled.
I forget what breeds you already have.
Orpingtons are always nice. I’m a big fan of Pekins (Cochins) and a black Maran would definitely be a good addition.
Can’t wait to hear what you see and end up choosing.

I am so excited! I don't know if you remember my telling you that one of the sellers is an old friend of mine, well I saw a photo on his facebook of a Light Sussex with her chick which is a Buff Orpington. I spoke with him today by phone he said seeings as its me, I can have that actual hen and her chick and he is only charging me £12 when it should be £27! He's told me she's very friendly and calm (which I like) he said she is 20 weeks which I would have preferred a little younger but I want her so much so I've said yes and we will be picking them up tomorrow soooo excited! I am so excited! I don't know if you remember my telling you that one of the sellers is an old friend of mine, well I saw a photo on his facebook of a Light Sussex with her chick which is a Buff Orpington. I spoke with him today by phone he said seeings as its me, I can have that actual hen and her chick and he is only charging me £12 when it should be £27! There’s a possibility the chick could be male though. Hopefully not.
Can you keep roos?
Is it a chick from another hen that she’s raising or did she start laying early and actually hatch one out herself?

Thank you! This is her baby, apparently she laid a few but this is the only one which hatched and is her first. We realise it could be a Roo, I need to check the deeds of the bungalow to see if there is a ban on Cockerels, in the next estate from me there is a ban, and no one round here has a Roo but then again I only know of myself and one other person on our estate who have chickens. We have decided that if the chick is male we are going to give it a go (provided we are allowed to) I have taken in all you guys share about your experiences and I have learned so much from you all, I feel confident enough to give it a go. However if worst comes to the worst my friend said he'd take it back, I made him promise if we have to give it back he won't cull it and will re-home it, he has promised me and is true to his word -- so if a boy and we are permitted to have Roos here I'm gonna give it a go

Broody successfully moved last night. She’s not budging at all today, seems quite content sitting on her four little eggs.

DH made her a replica of the nest box she was in. I’m not sure she knows she was even moved!

If I start breeding I may take cockerels back from those who cannot keep them but I can’t guarantee rehoming as it’s hard to do and we only have 1/2 acre here.
If it is a roo it may make your hens miserable as the hormones hit.
We’ll help you with the logistics if that’s the case.
I’m interested to see what a Buff Orpington/Light Sussex cross looks like.
Post a photo when the chick is two weeks old and I’ll try to sex it for you.

If your chicks feathers come in buff it’s a female.

Anna, I have discovered that a Buff Orpington crossed with a Light Sussex will result in atypical sex-linked chicks.
Because a Buff Orpingtons chick down is so light you can’t tell until they begin feathering.
If your chicks feathers come in buff it’s a female.
If it feathers out white it’s a male.

I won't be disappointed which ever sex it is but part of me thinks having a female would be the easy route - will have to wait and see what colour we get..... Watch this space ----->
