2018 Newbie Chat!

If they got their blue egg laying gene from an Ameraucana I’d say all bets are off on flying. Mine fly all over! If I didn’t supervise during free range I’d probably never find them again. They’d end up roosting in my trees! Mine are so light they can jump really high too! Very adventurous :gig
When I’m busy in the house it really helps having an enclosed run that they can’t get out of.
I believe it!
My friends EE hen jumped from a standstill to the top of a 6’ gate right in front of us while we were standing there talking.
I couldn’t believe she could do that.
I decided then that I didn’t want any EEs because I was afraid of them wandering around and getting killed.
But I really wanted some pretty colored eggs so if they try to wander I’ll be clipping wings lol.

She is very beautiful - what breed is she?

I think we decided EE. Very independent girl. When she sees me gathering the other young ones at night, she has decided that is not for her and she goes in on her own. She recently started landing on my back and becoming more friendly with me. She really goes out of her way to approach and talk to me. Very vocal.

So I built a small dust bathing sandbox in the run for the chickens. I filled it with a mixture of dirt, sand, and some wood ash. I made it raised and in the corner of the coop that gets the most sun so that hopefully it can dry out after a rain before the rest of the run does.

While sitting on a rock in the run waiting for a good demo shot of the sandbox, the chickens decided to play "how many chickens fit on one lap?"

The answer is 3.

I am a chicken playground

Prince collapsed today. I went home for lunch and noticed his waddles/comb were not red. He followed me then flopped down and started almost what looked like a seizure. I never picked anything up so fast on my life. I started rubbing his neck because that is where the struggle seemed to be. I even put my finger in his mouth to see if something was blocking the air way. After lots of rubbing he continued to hold his beak open. I gave him some Nutri drench and rubbed some more. Put him in a carrier and brought him to work with me. He ate his egg and food, comb is back to red, gave him some electrolytes in the water. He is talking to me.

Should I keep him in over night for observation or put him back out there? I think he ate something to big and almost choked. Luckily I went home a little earlier then normal for lunch. The girls went crazy when I removed him. They are going to be thrilled to see him.

What an afternoon!!!
