2018 Newbie Chat!

I let the bantams out today but I waited until the afternoon and it worked out much better.
There’s just too much amorous excitement amongst the two boys in the morning to let both groups out at the same time.
Plus I can give the bantams their morning treat in their run so they don’t have to compete with the LF and all those teenagers.
Pippin seems to be staying closer to Silkie now. I think she’s trying to avoid being bred by Angus.
Silkie did try for Agatha and she ran from him with Angus chasing.
Then she stopped and squatted and Silkie hopped on her but Angus was there in seconds kicking him off.
He didn’t try again after that but I did see him breed Pippin so that’s good.

I have three teenagers that are exceptionally friendly and enjoy being held by me.
Charlotte the Australorp and Sweetie and Elsie the Speckled Sussex.
Charlotte especially will seek me out in the morning for cuddles. :love
It’s so fun and satisfying to have birds that seem to enjoy me as much as I enjoy them.
Dear Charlotte is definitely a favorite.

Prince collapsed today. I went home for lunch and noticed his waddles/comb were not red. He followed me then flopped down and started almost what looked like a seizure. I never picked anything up so fast on my life. I started rubbing his neck because that is where the struggle seemed to be. I even put my finger in his mouth to see if something was blocking the air way. After lots of rubbing he continued to hold his beak open. I gave him some Nutri drench and rubbed some more. Put him in a carrier and brought him to work with me. He ate his egg and food, comb is back to red, gave him some electrolytes in the water. He is talking to me.

Should I keep him in over night for observation or put him back out there? I think he ate something to big and almost choked. Luckily I went home a little earlier then normal for lunch. The girls went crazy when I removed him. They are going to be thrilled to see him.

What an afternoon!!!
How scary!!! I'm glad he's seemed to recover...

When I brought him home, he immediately did his dance for the girls and mated with the two older ones. Then he crowed a few times. Once he went to roost, I grabbed him and checked him over again. The neck area felt fine. I will check on him throughout the night.

I knew that I have grown attached to these guys, but the fear and love I felt at that moment is something I can't even explain. All my vet tech experience came rushing back and I did everything with one hand because I woukdnt put him down.

We were pretty bonded before this and I do believe we have bonded even more. He really seemed to understand I was helping him. He really scared me. There was no time for crying, it was right to saving his life. I just wish I knew what caused it. He has never been a fan of bigger foods, he has always preferred smaller pieces. I left some cilantro out there, so I wonder if he tried eating that and it got stuck? I was going to get them pumpkins as a treat but now I'm afraid he will choke on the bigger seeds or the stringy stuff.

It's completely dark out there, I go to check on him and I hear movement in the coop. I briefly shine the light in the coop and Rose the EE is moving in the complete dark down the ramp and jumps up to the roost. If chickens can't see at night, how did she manage that without issue? This is the third time I've witnessed them moving in the dark as if it was day time. I don't know how they are doing it but they are.

I actually think he’ll be more wary of swallowing anything even close to too big now.
Close calls like that stay with you.
I’m SO glad he’s okay.
My friend Kat recently acquired a SL Wyandotte roo that she’s going to put with the hens I gave her.
He’s a very nice roo and let us pet him even though he’s spent most of his life alone in a cow pasture.

Angus won’t take food from my hand since he attacked DH and was kicked for it.
He wasn’t injured by it but I think he has more respect for us and our larger size now.

I know they're still very young, but I'm giving this girl the "please don't be a cockerel" side eye. She's 17 days old and a Blue Orpington. She's always been bigger than my two Buff Orpingtons, has a bigger comb, and has the start of wattles. Nothing is pink or red yet, but she's still getting the side eye from me. You're so pretty! Please be a pullet!
