2018 Newbie Chat!

Today I let the chicks out of their run into a small area of my yard. I made a little enclosure with a baby pen, lol. They were all enjoying the grass and such. Suddenly all of them looked up, so I did too. A hawk was waaay up in the sky. They immediately all ran back in the run and I stood up and helped shoo them in. Good to know I have smart chicks! It must have traumatized them somewhat because they all climbed into the coop and stayed there the rest of the day. They also roosted on the side of the roost farthest from the window. They've always roosted closest to the window, lol.
I knew there was a red tailed hawk that often flies around here, so I had been watching the sky on and off too. But they were the ones to see him. It's amazing they could see him up there and know he was danger. Other birds fly by all the time, there was a seagull gliding up there one time I looked up and that didn't concern them at all.
Chickens are most amazing creatures!

Well done little chickies :jumpy - so glad to hear they are alert :)
I just would like to warn that seagulls can be a threat to chicks too - they will eat a chick or two given the chance.

Anyone here know anything about incubating eggs? I have one egg that is a 50% chance was Sunny"s. Not even a couple days ago I used up all the duck eggs and now I could kick myself. I was considering grabbing 2-3 of Lucys eggs and putting 4 in an incubator. I figure if I did this around November 1st and was successful I would have December babies. I would keep them insude until about March. I found a 7 egg incubator.

I have to do more research, but it's something like this one

I think this is a wonderful idea and a great tribute to Sunni too even if Lucy's eggs, still is Sunni's flock - imo is a wonderful way to celebrate her memory

Pedro and Jellybean know their names, "don't you dare" and "no" and sometimes they respond to "here" depending on what mood they are in. Lilah knows her name and the word "here" She is the best behaved of the bunch,(including the ducks) Pedro and Jellybean are the naughtiest and the ones who get up to mischief and I wouldn't change them for the world. Roo has yet to learn hers.
I realise this is a chicken forum but I so excited and wanted to share that today I discovered one of my drakes (Jughead) knows his name and comes to me when I call him, I've been periodically calling him all morning just so I can relish him running to me - what a wonderful experience it is :love

Isn't it just adorable? Sunny wagged her butt when I said her name. The butt wagging was the best. I'll have to work with the other two. I think Ricky knows his name. Lucy is more skiddish, although they have been more clingy the last couple days with Sunny. I plan on spending some time with them today.

Guys, I got to work today and one of the guys has a 3 D printer to make stuff

I had this on my desk
