2018 Newbie Chat!

So how is the weather looking the next week for everyone? We are getting a decent amount of snow then the attic blast. Looking at single digits and then the windchill. Since the chickens and ducks are in the house I opened up the coop for those rabbits. I put some food and hay in there and filled up the heated water bottle. I really hope they use all this. I went out there a little bit ago and put hay and food in different areas for them. I know one has snuck in their with the chickens before.

I just can't stand to have any creature in this weather. I know they are meant to be but that doesn't stop my urge to help them along. Some would say Sucker is written on my forehead...lol

We're finally going to get snow here over the weekend. We're only supposed to get 2-4 inches I guess. Not much really. But yeah then below zero. I'm going to add more pine shavings to the coop, probably after the snow but before the freeze. That way I can just push some of the old shavings into the run to cover whatever snow might be in there. Hopefully not much cause the run is covered.
I'll definitely be concerned about them, but they'll be ok (trying to convince myself, lol). There has not been a single day yet that they haven't spent all day outside. And there's enough ventilation, the hygrometer that I hung next to the roost has been ok except for the days when it was just high outside.

I can not wait to get the run covered. I'm so hoping to get that done by next winter. I think it will make a world of difference. Even if I don't get the coop built, that cover will make the difference. It's going to be quite the job for me.

We are at our coldest so far this season but still not reaching the lows we usually get so hoping this winter will remain mild throughout. No sign of snow for us so far, just some first early AM, lots of rain and bouts of high winds. Had to towel dry my chickens before bed last night as it was raining non stop for a while but so far this morning it's dry.
Imo it's lovely of you to take care of the rabbits and I'm sure they appreciate it in their own way otherwise they would have left long ago. All power to you for your kindness.

Well I now know for sure that Pedro is the reason for the discord amongst the flock. This morning she was in the process of laying when I let them out and I decided I'd go ahead and give the others their get out of bed snack and keep back Pedro's portion for when she had finished laying. Well the difference in the flocks behaviour was large, no one chased no one, each just got on eating their treats and not bothered by nor taking any notice of the others. The flock were peaceful and getting along great, even Roo who usually gets chased off, was feeding along side them and no one bothered her at all. When Pedro came out I gave her, her share of the treats, the others came over but I helped hold them back so she could eat her share, Lilah however helped herself to some of Pedro's treats but Pedro didn't show any signs of being bothered about it. A while later I put out some bird seed and spread it around so everyone could get some and what a difference there was! Squabbling, chasing and the usual discord and as usual Pedro instigated it. However, I understand it, before Lilah and Roo came, Pedro was head hen and when Lilah came she took over, and shortly after this, Jellybean had a go at toppling Pedro although she didn't succeed, then with Roo growing bigger by the day, Pedro is having to reiterate that she is second in command and I believe is acting the way she does to ensure no one else over takes her and her doing so sets off the others and it is evident that all are working to ensure they don't lose their ranking in the flocks.
I admit though, it was lovely to be able to watch them all getting along but I never be without any if them so they just got to work it out for themselves - flock life :th

Have you tried keeping Pedro in the coop for a couple days so she can observe but not chase? I know when I was integrating I kept the teo okder girls in the coop for a couple days and they seemed to get it. A couple times I had to do a couple rounds of a couple days for them to get the point. I gave them treats when the others got them and treated everyone the same. A time out for birds...lol
