2018 Newbie Chat!

Got my little ladies outside they loved it, they are 2 weeks old. They both ate an earth worm, and some flowers. I got them in there coop outside now with a heating lamp inside of it. I live in the desert it is 80 degrees out.

They are struggling with the horizontal water nipples, to be fair i just go them yesterday. My son cant stop staring at them and holding them :popView attachment 1689593

Awww, so cute!

I don't think I remember what 80 degrees feels like....going to be -4 tonight. Weather guy on TV said well below normal temps for at least 2 more weeks.

You know us in the desert love the cold, we are tired of the heat! I wake up every morning and see the sun it gets old. Everytime i travel up north im like a little kid in the snow for the first time. Fog is also amazing to me, cant get enough of it.

Lol! So true! I usually don't mind winter, but below zero in March is too much. March is very much an iffy month here. We could have a blizzard or it could be 70 degrees. But below zero is not normal at all.

@ChooksNQuilts, my goodness that sounds terrifying. So glad you found the 7th chick. I’ve been there, missing chicks is the most horrifying thing. Home hatched chicks vs. store bought is a huge difference. I woke up a couple weeks ago to find distress calls from my jersey giants. 4 of the 5 slipped through the bars on my dog kennel. Luckily I put a fitted sheet around all my brooders now so they didn’t get very far, but they sure were scared when I found them. & poor Lazarus we found dead and stiff. DH gave it mouth to mouth and we wrapped her in a heated blanket and by that evening she was acting normalish.
I have to say that the image of that tiny chick shaking like that, flat on its back with its legs sticking straight out and it’s head buried under the shavings was haunting!
It will stay with me for a very long time.
I really think it was literally dying right then. To see the way it was dying was very upsetting.
What if I had slept another 30 minutes?
Makes me shudder...
I was going to give the chick to my friend since it was the only D’Uccle left in the bin but I just can’t now.
I have bonded with it.
She asked me to buy it for her since she couldn’t buy a single chick and didn’t want any of the others.

They’re all doing great now.
I put a saucer of crumble mixed with warm water in there and they just chowed down on it.
They know where the food and water are now.
Here’s my little fighter:

So I was doing research on the breeds I got. Cinnamon queens are the result of a RIR rooster and Silver lace hen, so are they still cinnamons if it's a RIR hen and silver lace rooster? It was pretty specific, that's why I ask. I also wonder what you get with a cinnamon hen and silver lace rooster?

A cinnamon queen is a sex linked cross.
The male must be gold/red based and the female silver based.
If you switch the male/female colors the cross won’t work because you won’t get sex linked chicks.
A cinnamon hen and a SL roo would probably have pretty chicks.
Because sex links are mixed breeds their offspring won’t be exactly like them.

I'm thinking about the future possibilities I have--some interesting.

With a roo that is a silver lace, would polish keep the polish look?

How do you learn this stuff? What's the best source?

I’ve learned most of what I know so far from BYC threads.
There’s some folks on here very knowledgeable about chicken genetics.
I will often just do a forum search of different thoughts or ideas.
Or google it but I usually get results from BYC anyway.
I also lurk on the Breed/Genetics categories and pick up a lot from reading there too.

I can understand how you don't want to part with your little D'Uccle. I hope your friend understands.
That Orpinton is adorable! So fluffy.
They are so cute...the Farm & Fleet near us is advertising chicks...I dare not go. Dangerous time of year for all of us, lol

Oh! I almost forgot! Pearl did an actual 100% sure of it squat yesterday! It was much more pronounced than what Diamond did the other week. I will be totally amazed if Pearl lays first. Her comb had been yellow longer than any of the others. It still seems lighter than the others but maybe there can be variation in individual chickens? I always thought she would be the last one to lay. She's top of the pecking order, maybe she's making the others wait, haha!
