2018 Newbie Chat!

Ok guys, I'm worried about my little sliver polish. She is half the size of the rest. So tiny that I call her tiny and little one. Tiny bit so expressive. She eats, drinks, plays, roosts, and poops like the rest--she has really good poop. She is the last to come when I bring treats--if she is sleeping, she doesn't get up food. She is the only one that still sleeps spread out like they do as little babies.

I've considered blind and even maybe bantam? I keep going back to the beak. It seems the beak is undergrown. It's not a cross beak. I sit and watch her eat and she eats fine of so it seems. It doesn't seem like the beak is closing like the rest and the top and bottom are the same size versus the top being slightly longer and covering the bottom.

She is a happy girl and I'm willing to do what is needed to help her along. I was going to give her some Nutri drench tomorrow and put that save a chick stuff in the water. It can't hurt any of them.
As far as sleeping all laid out, mine did that until they started roosting in the coop at night. Mine had a crooked beak too. Not crossbeak or one bigger than the other. The whole beak, top and bottom, was just tilted a bit to the side.
A bantam is always a possibility!

What do I do for her? Do I trim, file and shape or leave it?
Just leave it, try feeding her a wet mash of her food. She’ll have an easier time eating it. It doesn’t look to severe, with time it may look worse though. Just keep an eye on her. We had a severe crossbeak we had to cull. She no longer could eat by the time she was four months old. So just make sure she doesn’t starve.

I was reading and they say high protein stuff can sometimes help.

I'm keeping everything(food/water) higher up so its easier for her. I gave them tuna today--she grabbed a piece and ran with it. I kept the others busy so she could eat it, but she still felt the need to run. She definitely does not let it stop her. I have also given fermented feed.

I'm going to get a rock and put it in there so she can use it as a hard surface for her beak.

I worry about her because she is a polish, so now she won't be able to see her food either...lol. I will keep the top feathers trimmed at all times. I will do everything I can for my little one.

The two older girls are absolute bullies. I had to take Blanche out because they pecked her so bad that she has a wound. This is mainly hapoening when the younger ones are being mated. These two girls just keep pecking while they are stuck. I could not take the cries anymore. So Blanche and Dorothy are together. I think I'm going to remove the two older ones and then put Blanche and Dorothy back in. I feel the bullies need a time out.

There is absolutely no way that I will put either Polish with them. Little One/Tiny might end up being an indoor chicken if anyone picks on her. I will bring her outside to get some fresh air daily.

Oh my gosh, I'm so happy! Not that I need one now, but I found a chicken vet not too far away! They even have a chicken in the "Meet our Patients" section! They take care of the usual pets, exotics, and small farm animals.
You all are making me so jealous with your babies, lol. At least I have first eggs excitement to carry me over. No egg from Jade yet.
I'm in Texas right now, visiting my brother and sister-in-law. Nice to feel warmth again, lol. My daughter is gathering eggs for me and keeping me updated on who's laying.

We have so many apples. Last year I easily got at least 100lb. I made applesauce, apple butter, apple & lemon jam, apple cider, apple juice, & even made apple cider vinegar. We have yellow delicious, & a yellow/red variety. We plan on getting pigs for butcher next year, one breed in particular thrives on eating apples so we may try that out too! Harvesting alone takes up so much time each day.
It sounds so busy I think I need a nap. Lol. I have such a sweet tooth I think I'd make myself sick with apple desserts. I would go crazy with apple fritters apple pie and apple empanadas. Saute some up in butter with cinnamon to top my oatmeal. We love to eat them with peanut butter too. Even my 8 month old loves apples.
Around here so many kids show pigs that when they're done they sell or give away the ones they don't butcher pretty cheap. I know a girl that lives around here that got a "micro" pig last year. It's huge now! I don't know if she knew it was gonna get that big or not. Lol. She's an animal lover tho so I know she's happy either way.

Yes we are getting some very nice weather right now! We've been up in the high 70s/low 80s here most days. We have to enjoy it while we can because by May we will probably be in the 90s already. Lol. But with the nice weather comes severe storms. We've already had hail storms around the DFW and a tornado watch in my county. Do you mind me asking what part of texas you're in? You can be as vague as possible or not answer at all. Lol.

Corpus Christi area. It's been cloudy at times, but sunny others. Loving it. We saw a sea turtle release the other day, not baby ones, but bigger ones that had been cold shocked. It was pretty cool to watch. My brother retired here.

Me and DH have talked about visiting there one day. We live way up at the tx/ok border but not in the panhandle. We went to SPI a couple years back and it took 10 hours to get there! This state is so huge. Lol. I hope you enjoy your visit!

My little babies are getting so big. They’re almost three weeks old. I just switched out their pine shavings for wood bedding pellets. So much less of a mess. Did I ever mention my hatred for pine shavings. They always end up everywhere.
