Anyway...

My two mottled Cochins. Only a week old. My buffs were dust bathing in the background

She’s got a stripe down the middle!

Clearly a cockerel at 4 weeks. This is the baby I saved.

They’re such a lively bunch.

Here you can see my little buff cockerel already developing wattles. He’s also 4 weeks. He has Blu Kote on his back to keep the others from pecking the scabs on his back...which were caused by pecking lol

I got three Welsummer today, & I’ll get two brahmas on Tuesday or Wednesday to brood them with. Aside from the five my broody Australorp is sitting on this will conclude my chick days. Each of my Welsummer are so different from one another. One of them has a scabbed navel that I’ll keep a close eye on. View attachment 1720963

[No More Empty Nest]

All your chicks are so beautiful! I do so love seeing your pictures of them.

I got home from vacation today. I now have 29 eggs collected from the three that are laying. I must start using them now that I'm back!
Still waiting for Jade to start laying. I'm going to look at all the green eggs tomorrow and see if there's any difference in them that will enable me to tell who's laying which ones. They all lay in either nest box. Sometimes all in the top, sometimes all in the bottom and sometimes both. I'm glad of that so maybe there won't be as much trouble with waiting for an unoccupied nest box. I'm waiting for the day I get 4 eggs, then I'll know Jade is laying. Or if a different color shows up.

Lol don't hold your breath about the nest box situation mine often change to another but still fight over that one even though the other two are unoccupied lol

Big changes going on here! I let my broody Australorp Olive sit finally. She’s been sitting 7 days straight now. Another 2 weeks and we should have more chicks. I’ve broken all other broody hens (what a feat that was). My two Ameraucana that we hatched almost three months ago are going out to be with Lazarus in 2-3 weeks. My Jersey giants just turned 7 weeks and they are starting to get larger than the average pullets. So if you’re counting that’s four brooders going at once. What the hell was I thinking? I’m still considering getting a couple brahmas next week on top of that. Which would bring my brooder count to 5! In other news I’m pregnant, so I’m hoping to get all chicks out of the house ASAP.

Ameraucana: 9 weeks. Black is cockerel named Hawthorne to replace Manchineel (who we are culling tonight). Blue is pullet named Wisteria. (Her coloration is beautiful it has no black leakage)

Hello everyone. I’ve been very busy with chicks and work.
I now have 7 bantam chicks since I added 2 mottled Cochin babies last weekend.
And, of course, I have the 7 LF chicks that I’ve had for a few weeks now.
Everyone was transferred to the outside coops a few days ago.
And none too soon because both groups were outgrowing their brooders!
The bantams are in the bantam prefab coop which has been closed off to the adult birds.
Sadly this means Pippin & Cricket cannot lay in there (they could if DH would just pay attention and let them in when they’re ready to lay) so they’ve been going elsewhere.
I also bought a smaller prefab to use as a growout coop for the LF chicks.
Both groups of chicks have their heat plates out there with extension cords running out to them.
They’re doing great!
Even the tiny day old bantams are fine.
I will post pics this weekend as time allows.
I now have 30 chickens

I think I’m done.
Oh but wait!
I still have my order from Murray McMurray coming around May 1st.
17 more babies.
But most of them I plan on selling because I just don’t have the room for them.
And DH still doesn’t know about that order

My neighbor has bantams and I finally realize just how small they are! I now understand your dilemma of the LF breeding the bantams. They have a bantam rooster and his crow is just the cutest little thing. They have one BO and one Leghorn roo too. They have to keep the poor little bantam locked up. I'm sure for his safety. If I had the room I would get a couple of bantams. Our local TSC had some the other day.

My neighbor has bantams and I finally realize just how small they are! I now understand your dilemma of the LF breeding the bantams. They have a bantam rooster and his crow is just the cutest little thing. They have one BO and one Leghorn roo too. They have to keep the poor little bantam locked up. I'm sure for his safety. Honestly, if I didn’t eat so many eggs I’d just have bantams.
I absolutely love them!
They eat less, poop smaller , are way less damaging to plants and gardens, and the roosters are easier to handle and don’t tear up the hens backs.

Angus continues to attack DH so I will be rehoming him and if I can’t find a buyer it’ll be freezer camp.
His behavior has been changing too.
He grabs the hens sometimes and forces them.
Sometimes Oliver kicks Angus even!
I will keep Oliver for now but he may go to another home too.
I’ve decided to only keep bantam roosters.
I will probably get a couple more bantam cockerels with my Murray McMurray order of Belgians in May.
I may put them with the LF hens since they’re a clean legged breed (unlike the bantam Cochins & D’Uccle) and I don’t really want partially feather legged chicks lol.
This will give my girls a break from boys for a while. The new ones won’t even be mature until September/October.
My Cochin and D’Uccle boys will have to be confined to the prefab run until the Belgian chicks mature and can fend for themselves.
Otherwise the Cochins will take over all the females and not allow the new boys to breed.
Of course, my little buff guy is extremely skittish and scared so he may not take over anything

I'm sure the girls appreciate the extra goodies. Do you have any pics of the ducks in their new home?

I have eggs everywhere--can not keep up with eating them it giving them away.

Temps were like 35 today but felt warmer. Kids outside playing like it's summer..lol

I got my car cleaned out, dog poop picked up, washing the duck blankets and brushed 3 dogs. I'm about done. Next weekend I will clean out the pen--lots of rabbit poop. I will measure the first wall for the run and hopefully get thst up next weekend, then start ensuring second wa and put it up the followinv week.

I think I have more of a. i have an idea on the coop and seperation for everyone. Next week I'm putting the pool on a few sites to get rid of it and I'm hoping to get rnough to pay for the trees to come down.

Awwwwwww poor Angus, I hope you don't have to cull him that will be such a shame and so sad. What a shame it hasn't worked out with him
