All 16 arrived alive and LOUD!!!! :celebrate

Note... the tracking did not update for a very long time. Since I KNOW they cannot arrive at my destination before Tuesday... and on Tuesday afternoon tracking still said the shipping tag had been created but does not mean it arrived at USPS yet. I KNOW Wednesday IS a hopeful possibility.. so I MADE sure to contact my post master and request contact upon arrival and let them know I was expecting chicks in following day or two. They asked for my tracking # and said they would call me. Finally at 2 am this morning the tracking showed arriving at SF airport. Which is then a 7 hour truck ride here. With little hope they would actually arrive today after that tracking delay... I am so thankful that my local postal workers do OFTEN make the extra effort! :yesss:

In the past the post office 2 hours south of me has called to say I can pick up chicks that arrived too late to go out on the truck and they would even stay late for me. A 4 hour trip just isn't doable for me, but I still value their effort.

Wanted to share my hope and joy with you! :D
 
Yay for the chicks!!!!

Set up the brooder yesterday. The heating mt seems to have an auto off function that wasn't specified on the controls. We'll order a new one later today.
 
Mine have also arrive and so far are all doing well. Only one is looking a little weak. I'm keeping an eye on her. I also had an excellent experience with my postal workers. The tracking indicated they were "in route" at 5:33 am to my post office so I figured the'd arrive within 4 hours of that since it's 2 hours from the place they left and figuring for stops along the way. Anyhoo, I finally called my post office at 1:30 and they went above and beyond - called and located them having been dropped at another place along the way, scheduled to be picked up in the morning and brought the rest of the way to my post office. It was 45 minutes away so we arranged for me to run there rather than wait the additional day. It's been really cold at night here so I didn't want to leave them if picking them up was an option. It's probably a good thing I did too. One of them was lying in a wet spot and was really cold. I was sure she wasn't going to make it but she is doing great now. (it's a different one that is showing weakness signs now). They are now 4 days old and zipping around chirping and I'm loving every minute of it.

Like I say, my route seems to be harsh... but I will totally consider Meyer's again. The chicks seemed so strong and healthy (compared to MPC but those were bantam), though I think one might currently be failing... sometimes it happens even in my own hatches. :hmm That's a lot different than having half arrive dead and the other half die over the next few days despite your best effort. Back then I didn't know to crush the feed, but whoever gave me that tip.. was right on!

Pretty sure you got of the moral of my previous story... which was be sure to make contact with you local post master. ;)

Oh... one other thing... Meyers DID have heat packs under the bedding inside the box. No extra charge or mention of it. So they made the decision, and provided the service! I mean it may be more cost efficient than replacing chicks that don't make it... but they still get bonus points for the effort that I didn't receive from other companies! :thumbsup The chicks were still a bit chilled and mad... took a short while (maybe an hour) to bring their core temperature up and change to happy settled peeps. I have a feeling without that my results would not nearly have been the same.

Now your wait is killing me! :pop
 
Maybe 2018 Valentines day Mail-along? Didn't start out like that, but that's kinda what it is now :)

My mom is going to swing by the post office later today to talk to the post master about the chicks, and to report the carrier who dumped the package with the new heat mat into a puddle on our sidewalk. Luckily the heat mat is fie, and the cave is nice and warm! So how long after the hatch date should the chicks get here? I'm prepared for them to come today, but I think they'll probably come tomorrow or the day after.
