This is also the biggest ones favorite place to sit and hang out.

How can I discourage this before it starts dumping the water or trying to fly out the top?

Hello everyone! I’ll be getting my chicks here soon, I’m in middle TN. Not sure how to link my scared Tennesseean newbie post but it still applies. Grew up in the city, live on a farm now and these will be our first farm animals. We go through a lot of eggs so I plan to get only australorps. It is odd to me to see people get such a variety of birds, I understand people want them for pets....but seems like you would get a parrot? Guess I’ll find out! Silkies do look pretty cool...they would be my other “for fun” option. You can bet I’ll be posting and asking a bunch shortly!
I understand that some folk get a bit of variety because some breeds are prolific layers, some are better Mona's, and some are more alert and more protection.
I have a somewhat varied flock because I like big dogs big cats and big chickens, although I like small cattle. And my wife wants pets.
Don't need a lot of eggs but understand certain breeds lay longer into winter.

Hi everyone,

We have twelve chicks currently in their brooder - it's a small wading pool with plenty of pine shavings, a heat plate, feeder and waterer. We have RIR and Buffs that are 3 weeks old, and four black australorps that are 3 weeks old. The barrier we have around it is that orange and white fence thing they sell on Amazon. We have one daring RIR that decided tonight was the night to fly up to perch on the barrier, so I took a fitted sheet and covered the top of it, but I need to figure out something a little nicer than a sheet to encourage them to stay in their confinement for a few more weeks. :D

Sorry but what’s a Mona?

Cheap chicken wire, or fruit tree netting.
