2019 Spring Ducklings are here!

WOW! I had a good Halloween surprise, there were no trick or treaters to get the candy last night but when I opened the coop this morning there was our first egg laying on the wood chips! The hens are 22 weeks old, I have no idea which of the four laid it. I need to get to tractor supply for oyster shells. A happy day!

That first egg is always a thrill. I said goodbye to my spring drakes and my goose today. They have a terrific new home with a new BYCer. I miss them but am happy they have ducks and geese to live with.

For those who do not know the story, my wife and I were visiting @Magnolia Ducks . We were in their swimming pool when the goose was making a ruckus . I got out of the pool and ran WAY uphill thinking there a bold daytime predator. I did not know that she had went to the fowl area and that is what made the goose go off.

Oh yes, the first egg always tastes sooo good! - I remember as if it was yesterday, walked into the duck-house and there it was: The first greenish egg!
What color do your ducks lay?

Elvis is now sporting his tail curl and was seen as he mounted his hen buddy, on dry land, and both of them did a victory dance afterwards. He will finally get in the kiddie pool occasionally.

Lucky you! I was never able to figure out which egg came from which duck, even with the use of my DuckyCam. All i can say is that the greenish eggs are from the Runners and i assume the ginormous white eggs are from the White Layers. All other eggs are just white and large and i have no clue who is laying what.
So Elvis got into business! - Well count your eggs next spring, so that you won't be tricked out by a broody duck like me this year.

I am looking forward to having at least one duck go broody. If one will do it then I do not have to put out the money for a Brinsea incubator. Because of my combination of colors of hen and drake I will have chocolate & white girls and black & white boys running around and a better understanding of just how fast they grow up. We were not prepared for how fast these four girls went from 3 day old arrivals to where they are now growth wise at 23 weeks. Yeah we had read about it, many times, but did not understand how fast they were referring to.
