2022 Chick Order

Unless I add on to my coop again next spring, I have room for at most 3 more birds, going by the 4 sf guideline. Right now, I think I can resist adding more birds, though if DH is amenable to adding on to the coop, my resolve will certainly wane.

Once all 6 of my females are laying in the spring, I will have plenty of eggs. I doubt DH will see any need to add onto the flock, and therefore the coop. Sigh.

I can understand that reasoning too. My neighbor has 35 pullets, and about 20 of them are laying. She has the egg market on our road sewn up. Her son is going to be taking that over next spring when his birds start laying, and I don't want to mess with a young entrepreneur.

Maybe you can ask your neighbor if she is interested in ordering chicks, and add your 3 that you want to her order!

If you have a surplus and he has high demand perhaps he would be willing to buy some from you at a wholesale price?

I just ordered my first ever batch of chicks from McMurray. There is a 6 chick minimum but if you buy 15+ there is no 'service charge' of $35.
I tried to group orders with two friends but I had to pull the trigger on the order as McMurrays was selling out on the breeds I really really wanted. I managed to get 4 SR Niederrhiners from my alternate list. As it is I have Bielefelders, Niederrheiners and an EE coming, plus a mystery chick. 9 in total as DH limited me to 8.(Mystery chick does not count)

Except for these kids' parents, everyone on our road is old enough to be their grandparents, including their grandparents. So all of us oldsters are looking at these three young boys (5, 8, and 10) as "hired help" when we need some chores done in the not to distant future.

An investment in the future. My oldest son's first job was helping a partially-disabled man with his lawn and garden chores. The mentoring was more valuable than the money earned.

That’s how I look at it too Our last mystery chick (I wanted the last BCM and there was a two chick minimum) isn’t one I really want to keep, but one of my girls insists it’s hers… We’ll see!

Lol. DH says 4, so I’ll get 5 & he won’t say anything. If he changes to 5 I’ll get 6!

I think he knows how this works, kind of when I tell him we have to be there 15 minutes before we actually do…the only way to get him there on time!

That’s super interesting! I wonder why they’re partial to heat lamps. We did lamps this year for our first time ever having chickens and it was so much stress. Definitely switching to a plate this go around

It had something to do with shipped chicks needing more heat the first few days.
regardless, I house all chicks in the coop and still gonna use the sweeter heater due to safety.
