2022 Chicks - Cackle Experience

They hatched 3/28. So 2.5wks at the time of those photos. They are not outside yet. Just an adventure and picture time. I’ll wait til they are feathered fully before going outside for good.

Ok quick update on our Bielefelder chicks. As you know we lost a hen and our roo to what we think is coxy leaving us with 5 hens. We treated the whole flock and the last 5 are doing really well. I will try to get an updated picture on here soon. We also received a call from our breeder friend that she had two Bielefelder eggs and only one hatched and it was a roo (hatched the day after our little roo (Blue (named blue as his feathers coming n on his head and wings were blue)) died) and we could have him if we wanted. He is a week behind our chicks. So he will be coming to live with us in May. We moved them to a bigger living area, switched them to the brooder plate and started them on chick grit as they are now in the pine shavings. These girls are super playful and we love spending time with them. They have learned to fly up to the ledge of the pen and then jump to where we are to get cuddles and scratches. It only took one of them to do it and then 3 of the 5 now do it the other 2 are still a little behind/fearful. The starter/teacher we decided to name after our neighbors dog (who taught every one of their dogs to jump the fence) LOL. So we have Tyne (the teacher), Feisty, Cleo (her eye lines look like Cleopatra) and Thumper (she was the 1st to start hitting the food dish like thumper) and one we still haven't named.

I do when they are around 4 weeks. It’s still pretty chilly most days here.

I know some people let them outside for a short time (an hour or so) do you do this?

Mine go outside as much as possible in a pen. when it was chillier here we were in the bright sun and it was very short. Last week it warmed quite a bit in my part of NC and I took them to the same sunny spot and they were panting within minutes( we were camping for 3 days so they hadn’t been out) got them in and gave them a break and then found a new shaded spot on the side yard. Which is great cause I can watch them from the kitchen window. I’ve had them out from 1-6 hours. The weather has been spectacular here, the pollen is terrible. We leave for FL tomorrow and my DH definitely won’t be giving them field trips outside. But I hope he will be working on the coop. Mine hatched on 3/29.

What is the outside temp? We have been in the 70's at times but we have a light wind

Now Im super stressed as I think one of the chicks is unwell. She sleeps alot and she is eating and drinking but she sleeps more than the others. Right now she is sleeping in a corner away from the other chicks. I am giving her save a chick probiotics and electrolytes. I just dont know what else to do. I checked the temp in the brooder and it is 95.8 and the outer edges are 87. *fingers crossed she makes it*

I had 2 pass in one week. The first one was tiny when we got her and she wasn't growing. She slept a lot and was really lethargic. Then her poop got foamy, she stopped eating and drinking then she couldn't stand. shortly after that she passed away. We were told by our breeder friend to give the save a chick and we did but it was to late for her (we even used a syringe to get her to drink). Breeder friend thought it might be coxy as there were several signs and we didn't feed medicated food. So we treated the whole flock who were starting to show the same signs. Everyone started doing better but then the roo took a turn and went down hill this time we were prepared (we thought) and made sure he ate and drank every 30 minutes, checked his poo and basically babied him. day 3 of treatment he stopped eating and was only sleeping and early morning on day 4 he passed away.

All the other chicks are doing well and thriving. We treated them for coxy and gave them very diluted nutri drench for one day after and we haven't had any problems since.

I’ve got my fingers crossed for you! I’ve lost three since Saturday. Similar symptoms. I started treating for coxy Saturday and was able to nurse one other back to health I think. I guess that’s probably what I’m dealing with too. The one I lost today didn’t show symptoms until today which threw me for a loop. I would’ve thought they’d have gotten enough immunity from the medication by now.

Edited to add that every time I’ve lost one, I’ve found a dropping that looks like.. intestines.. for lack of a better way to describe.
