2022 The Rest of the Story

At 4 weeks old, these fully-feathered babies have been moved to the integration pen in the main coop.

I had *thought* to leave them in the brooder another week since it's fall, but we're having a week of remarkably lovely weather with nights in the 50's so I moved them over like summer chicks.

Their father and some of their possible mothers are taking a bit of interest in the newcomers. :D

They're 6 weeks old tomorrow and I had to change bands this morning. Some of the boys are growing so very fast that I was getting worried about them being too tight.

Pink and Yellow Bands: rose comb, probable female.

Blue Band: Half-Cochin, probable female.

Pink and Green, Forgot to make notes. Can't tell for sure with the head turned away, but I *think* it's a rose-combed male.

Of course the pictures are terrible because I'm juggling the phone in one hand and the protesting bird in the other hand. 🤣

Besides the first one the rest really all look like males to me lol

My Australorps can be really confusing at this age because they mature so quickly.

I rely more on the 3-4 week exam than the 6 week exam, but if you look at the Splash girl's comb compared to Red's or Green's you can see a lot of difference.

I didn't make my 13-day sex predictions public, but I was about 75% right at that age already.

Si glad you got that splash. My friend was on the splash struggle bus this year too. Order a ton of blues to try andnget a splash cochin and only got Blacks and blues

I have hatched a ridiculous number of blues and blacks without getting my 25% splash.

She got one splash that was an obvious failure to thrive from the moment I opened the box to do head counts on the order. It only lived about a week and we had to keep trying to save it when it would just go down.

Glad yours seems like it had a better start though. She'll be awfully pretty

That's sad.

I *really* wanted a splash male (or, better, at least 3 to choose from), but a splash female is, at least, a start.
