Well we just took our 24 birds in to be processed and we paid 100 bucks. Is this a good price? We had 1/2 of them eighted and 1/2 of them quartered Also, how long are you suppose to keep them in the fridge to rest before sticking them in the freezer?

In my region, $4 a bird is standard, and up from there.

People in the Midwest and South often claim they get it done for $1/bird. But, there simply is nothing like that within hundreds of miles of where my farm is.

Some people, though, raise and sell birds along with raising them for their own tables. In many states, this requires you to use either a federally or state inspected processor. So DIY isn't an option.

Having a processor do the work, as well, is a nice liability cushion if you're charging $$$ for your birds.

Wow, I agree! After buying them and feeding them for x number of weeks, I wouldn't want to pay anything to process them. That makes for REALLY expensive chicken meat.

Oh, it has been so therapeutic to raise and process the meaties! My family has definately bonded in new ways!

I guess it depends. If you ar ehappy withthe outcome and they are clean and ready for the frypan, it likely was a good deal. If they came back bruised and full of pin feathers, no. It also depends on your region. Around here you can pay $2 at a giant processor if you have a ton of birds or $4.25 for a few at smaller farm and on a shorter schedule. Personally, if I had them done (I do my own) I would rather pay $4 a bird to a small farm family to do it that a huge processor. But thats me.
