Hello,
I have a 24 hour old chick that cannot stand up. It propels itself forward by flapping its wings and pushing with its rear legs. He doesn not appear to be spraddel legged but it lays/site on its hocks and does not seem to know how to put weight on its legs to stand up. They do not look deformed.
I had to unzip the egg after 12 hours, as the chick after zipping quite a large gap could not zip around the egg- I don't know if it was stuck ( it appeared to be drying out) so it could not move it head or what. I let it hatch on its own and it kicked its way out of the shell wuite forcefully. HE also took much longer to dry- I had to bathe it to remove some residue that might have been a little yolk. Now he is all fluffed out. Will drink water from a dropper and eat a little from a lid if I hold these things to within his beak.
I have created a split using a 3/4 inch bandage to keep his legs from sliding out from under him today. It has helped a tiny bit but he does not sit up on his own.
Does anyone have any ideas? I am going to start exercizing his legs and hold him in the upright position. several times a day to strengthen his muscles if that might help. So Help!! Anyone! Thank you.
