24 Hours hatching: do I assist?

Chick is doing much better. Swelling is down. Little dude has fluffed a bit. I offered a handful of starter and left it near incubation-mom. She showed how to peck. Chick ate a crumble or two then went back into the feathers. I will get water in there soon in a small container.

How's the vent looking? Clear or messy?
It's clear. I am very obsessive about making sure... I think I am irritating incubation mom because I check multiple times a day. But vent is clean and the stink is mostly gone. I dont want to wash the baby for obvious reason but you cannot smell anything foul unless your nose is all up in the featherlettes. I am going to clean out the nest once I am sure no one else is hatching, which seems sad but likely. It was an experiment. It's her first broodiness, it was Richard's first year of mating, it was Ruby's first few eggs. There are 5 total in the nest, 4 now that this one emerged. I do not want to use an electric incubator. We lose power a lot and for long periods of times. Sometimes days. I am in a rather rural area. I wanted to see if silkie was up for the incubation and nanny job. It seems she is, with a few small adjustments needed.

Little dude was under the silkie, lifeless, a couple hours ago. I have a sadness. Silkie was reluctant to give up the corpse.
