27th or 28th May hatch, looking for buddies

I was leave the cracked egg. I have found many after candling with cracks in them and still have them hatch out. Some people put clear nail polish over the cracks, or candle wax. Seems to me the nail polish could kill them. I just leave mine alone and see what god has in mind for them and its worked out well for me.

I candled, got 31 out of 35 developing just fine.

I would agree with Ronnie. Don't pitch out any eggs if you can help it. Try to patch it with nail polish, scotch tape or candle wax. I've read of many success stories here by doing that.

My wife stopped by Wally-World tonight and bought our candler.

. Out of my 18 eggs 1 has a blood ring, the 4 larger eggs have quite thick shells and couldnot see alot barring that 1/3 of the egg is full (good sign) and the other 13 eggs, well, I could see little chickies happily jumping and swimming all over the place

I have 3 Black Copper Marans eggs in my mini-R-Com incubator due on the 27th, and just set 20 more in a LG incubator to hatch around June 4th.
Total 17 BCM eggs and 6 EExWLeghorn eggs (should be white chicks, easy to tell apart from the BCMs right at hatch)

Candling BCM eggs is pretty much impossible (for me) so I basically just wait and see what hatches
fl.gif
I had 100% hatch in my R-Com on my first incubation that included 2 BCM eggs so I know it works well with them. I had a good hatch my first EVER incubation attempt in the LG, so I'm crossing my fingers on them as well

Had to post it somewhere!
wee.gif
and if I put it on FB hubbs would growl at me! lol

ETA: I left my LG out on the back porch to air dry and my chicks pecked a hole in it. My boss gave me his - it's the same but older. This is my first attempt with this particular bator. I'm keeping my first one for "spare parts" it would be usable except for the corner of the top is missing which leaves a pretty big "ventilation" hole
lol.png
Don't make the mistake of leaving your styro-bator around chicks or chickens! lol

Oh I candled a LOT my first couple of hatches. Still had an amazing hatch rate my first try, considering it was my first try and that I hand turned and candled a lot and well, let's face it the LG doesn't have the best reputation.
But now I pretty much know what's going on in there. Ignoring the incubator is a good skill I guess. I'm pretty good at it until they start pipping!

Great news Natchlaly!

Welcome to our hatching thread Tala!

Our family just finished candling the eggies!

Out of our 36 eggs, We found 1 with a blood ring and had to pitch it. The BCM eggs are mostly questionable at this point. I couldn't tell what was going on. I thought I saw some dark masses in there, but wasn't sure. Of all my Golden Lakenvelder eggs ARE FERTILE!

Their light-color shells made it very easy to identify viability.

Here are a few pics of my eggs.

We found a crack in one of our BCM eggs and decided to paint nail polish on the fissures.

Here is a typical photo of one of our BCM eggs. Besides noting the porous shell, I couldn't really tell if it was fertile.

All of our Golden Lakenvelder eggs looked like this. We could even see movement in these little devils!

Our whole family gathered around. Each person had a job to do. One daughter took notations on the egg chart, one was responsible for opening and closing the incubator lid and the other took photos. My wife ran around acting as a gofer, blocking out light and retrieving another camera, etc.

It was a great family event. We're counting down the days for our next candling. I just hope the BCM eggs are a little more straight forward.

The older LG is so much less sensitive than the new model. Same little twisty knob deal-y, but you have to turn it a lot more to get a degree or so (since I'm used to barely moving it, it seems like a lot anyway)
First night it was about 99, I've got it holding around 101 now. I've had much better hatches from the still air at 101-102 rather than slightly lower temps. Now that I know the temp will stabilize when I close the lid, turning will be less stressful from here on out. Unless it gets hotter in the house, you know how the LG is about that. It's been usually cool the last few days and the a/c isn't even running, but when it's 90 outside the bedroom with the computers does heat up a bit in the afternoon sun. Thankfully I'm working closing shift the next two weeks, so I'll be around to watch it when the sun is out.

The LG hatch should be 8ish days behind my R-com hatch so I should be able to mix the chicks in without issues once they are a few days old. It helps (IMO) if the bigger numbered group is the younger group - only 3 older ones vs many little guys. At least I hope to have many little ones!!

This will be my last hatch until fall, probably November. I like hatching chicks in the fall so they are at point of lay right in the spring

Nice egg pics GeoKan!

I candled a couple of my eggs today and I'm honestly not sure what I saw
idunno.gif
I checked the thread that shows egg process through each day, and it didn't look like any of them. So now I'm thinking that they may be bad
sad.png
I'll post some pics in a couple of days when I can get my wife to help me. One question, my hen is incubating them
big_smile.png
is it alright to turn them when I pick them up? Should I make sure they are put back the exact same way when I picked them up? Thanks for the help!
