Well, winter has finally struck her in the Dallas-Ft. Worth area and I am keeping chickeys warm fine in the storeroom where they sleep with a little ceramic heater that can keep it about 40 today.
I have let them out to eat their morning seed in the sun and poured warm water in the frozen water containers. I'll have to do that pretty soon again as the wind makes it around 12 degrees.
The chickens have their choice of playing outside or going back into the chickey house where it is warmer and certainly out of the wind.
How are the rest of you doing?

It's nice and warm there in the Dallas area. Here in Indiana it's supposed to get down to 12 degrees tonight. Im sure it's colder farther north. My chickens won't get any added heat source unless it gets down below zero for a few days in a row. The coop is draft free with the pop door open to their fenced run all the time, but it's on the East side and doesn't get the wind. I'm anxious, though, to see if then will spend much time outside the coop when it gets around zero temps.

24 degrees here in Sacramento area, last three mornings. Got down to 30 degrees by 9 pm with a hard freeze until after 9 am each morning. I chose to keep the heat lamp on during the daylight hours (instead of turning it off when I let the chickens out in the morning and turning it back on when they're in the coop at night). I can't help feeling sorry for them, even though I understand they'll be fine.

I open the pop door and the chickens come running out onto the frozen grass. I worry about their naked, bony feet after the nice, warm coop. They have water in the coop, but still gather around to peck the ice in the outside waterer - probably out of habit, but they wait for me to break the ice out of it and replace it with liquid water. Which begins to form ice within a few minutes. I figure they can go back into the warm coop to drink.

But they run around investigating things and eventually congregate in a clump in the sunniest spots. They sit down, covering their feet, and nestle close to each other. After a while, one gets up to go do something chickeny, and others will follow. Later on, they crowd back together in the sunny spot.

But they all go back inside the coop well before dusk, waiting for me to close that pop door so the warmth doesn't leak out through it.

DFW area of Texas got a freeze last night and I was totally pumped about it. I finally got to test the new cookie tin heater I made. Let me tell you now it passed with flying colors. I have 2 water buckets side by side and one had the cookie tin underneath it. Water in bucket 1 had a layer of ice on it that I was barely able to break with my hand. The water in bucket 2 on top of the cookie tin heater did not have any ice. Granted I did go out and plug it in after midnight and I checked it at 7 this morning. Now I want to go to Tractor Supply and get a Themo Cube. Bottom line is that I am totally pleased with the Cookie Tin Heater.

Norther blew in last night, sending temps down into the 20's with a brisk wind. The wind's still going, and it feels like 22 outside, it's 34 degrees officially. And my three adult chickens are cheerfully destroying the last of my fall garden, drinking water out of the dog bowl (after I took out the 1/4" layer of ice.)

Well here in east texas wooo hoooo it is cold cold cold in the lower 30'2 right now 12 noon but the wind is a killer bringing it into the 20's. I let my chickens out got chickens everywhere lol but they seem to be none the worse for it enjoying their free range time in the pasture and are sunning themselves and rolling in the dirt go figure!!!! The goat is hollering she is not happy and the calf is now under the heat lamp in his stall and the pigs are all bedded down in their little house. Haven't seen cold like this in a while !!! Maybe it will kill off some of the stinkin bugs that ate my garden this past summer lol!!!

Currently 37 and sunny skies in Arlington...

Low is supposed to hit 28, so I believe we'll get a fire laid by.

45/34 for tomorrow
50/41 for Friday
53/45 for Saturday
65/49 for Sunday (WOOT!)

It's pretty chilly, but I'm thankful to be where I am... *passes electric blankets to Yanks*
