2nd coop attempt

just a quick update with some photos. i haven't had much time to work on it until today, a rainy windy day. but ive had some bad luck with a bout of colitis. I set the roof line today and with any luck i'll have the roof up and done just after the new year. and have my chickens in a new home soon.

built a roost, dont really know how i feel about it. I set it high enough off the ground that they wont need to fly up to it, just a quick hop. so, no need for a ladder or ramp. high enough to either build a poop tray or a litter box or something, at the very least have the ability to get a shovel under it. but i wonder if the 2X4's are going to be comfortable on their feet. a few hens are missing toes and i worry about their ability to perch.

I trimmed the studs that stuck up beyond the roof line and finished the front wall. i think it's turning out rather handsomely for being built out of pallet scraps.

on a side note, i know it's x-mas eve and all, but my wife works in a hospital and doesnt have off for the holidays, so i'm stuck at home with time on my hands. i know it seems odd to work on a project like this on a holiday, i'm sure my neighbors were glad to hear i'd finished hammering nails for the day.

and just a few pics of some of our chickens, couldn't name all the types my wife brings home. if you hadn't noticed by now, i like taking pictures.

I think most set the 2x4 so they can roost on the wide, 4", side. This also allows them to keep their feet warm by sitting on them. Beautiful set up. Glad you get to keep them. Hope your neighbor doesn't find other ways to make trouble.

thanks for the idea on using the wide side of the 2X4, didnt even think of that. I guess once i get the coop done and they're all moved in, we'll see how it goes. i can always make alterations if needed. but knowing my wife, i'll need to expand the roosting area by spring any way.

and i'm glad we get to keep the chickens as well, they make wifey happy.

Roost height tip: They like to roost as high as possible, so roosts should be higher than nests or they'll roost in the nests and poop them up.

Looks like you're somewhere warm, green grass In December, might need more ventilation in the summer.

Very nice coop. And it's so nice to hear about a chicken owner winning an ordinance/nasty neighbor dispute!
