So, I've been keeping chickens for about a year and a half... Today I had my second chicken die. The first acted bizarrely for a while and was my first post on BYC. Today I had my second chicken death and it was similar to the first. This hen for the last week I could tell wasent right. She would sit and sleep for a long time and her comb was grey and not red/pink like the others. She had been this way for a few days and this morning when I went out to feed and didn't see her I knew she was dead in the house.

Am I doing something wrong? Is two out of 25 dying bad? Could I have healed this bird? What disease has the symptoms of lazy sleeping birds with grey combs? I feel bad like I might be doing something wrong or not doing enough

I wonder if it's a viral infection. The other possibility that springs to mind is whether they've eaten something toxic. You really need to get your chicken to a vet to get a proper diagnosis. As this is your second unwell chicken, perhaps it's something contagious. If that's the case, it could be passed on to the rest of your flock.

I had the following symptoms in my flock.
1 decrease in egg production
2 birds that just werent right they seemed tired and lethargic
3 combs and legs were noticably lighter in color to almost a grey color
4 poop was watery and eventually was a green color
5 lost weight
6 final stage they would just lay there and not move
7 death

Treated for coccidiosis, this helped but did not fix problem

I went on line to www.justanswer.com and the vet replied to the question

"This sounds like you have developed a bacterial enteritis."

Treated with LS-50 this appears to have fixed the problem, we have not lost any more birds in the last week.
