Hi,
I'm in SC with 2 Isa browns, 2 Faverolles, and 2 black Concords. I got them as chicks August 1st. They are in a chicken tractor, and they don't roost, every night they meet up in one of the nesting boxes. Is this okay, or should I block off the boxes? Will they start laying this winter or will it be spring?

Scott, pic of your tractor please. Is it tall enough that they can feel safe on the roost? Is it hardware cloth so that a coon can't reach in to grab them, or a weasel sneak under or through the wire to kill them? Does it have a skirt? I would be sure the tractor is secure, and that they have a section that is protected from wind and weather where they can roost and feel safe and secure. If all these needs are met, block off those nest boxes. Chickens should not be allowed to sleep in nest boxes unless they are bitty babies or a broody hen on eggs or chicks.

Hello, Scott, and welcome to BYC. Are your roosts higher than the nest boxes ? Chickens generally like to roost at the highest point possible. Given their age going into the shorter day length they may or may not lay until spring.
