. We still have to finish our roosting racks and nest boxes and it will be about ready for moving in day!! Our chickens were out bug hunting and they were so curious about what we were doing... they had to come over and check everything out. They went straight to the water bowls and started drinking.

Very nice job! We build sort of the same type. Mine are inside the main barn, we recently finished a new one for my over flow of hatching chicks from broody hens. The builder (DH) has bought into my idea to add elect outlets in a place I can reach to plug in water heaters or heat lamp for those cold days.

Jenny, thanks for the additional photos. What kind of boards did you use? Are they pine, treated, cedar, etc? I'm talking about the 2X6's that along the bottom and inbetween your pens. Thanks, Martha

Hi Martha.

All of the boards at the bottom of the coop are treated... anything that will be exposed (like the 4x4 posts, the doors, etc) are all treated lumber. The boards that are right under the roof are the only thing that are not treated.

Hi foREVer.

I am not been keeping track of every penny, but a good estimate is $800-$1000 depending on how thrifty you can be. My DH is a contractor so he gets a pretty good discount on lots of building materials. I have listed some of the items that we purchased for the coop. We had lots of lumber, pvc piping and other materials laying around the barn that we did not have to purchase. I also visit our local Habitat for Humanity store. I got lots of things there (all the galvanized door hinges for $.75 each, full sheet of plywood - $4.00, several 1/2 sheets of OSB $7.00, etc) at really cheap prices. We also recently cut down a large pine tree on our property and had it sawed up into lumber... used a lot of the rough cut lumber for the roof.

Roof metal $160.00 Bought 2nd's from our friends that own a metal roofing business... you cannot tell there is anything wrong with them
Welded fencing 6'x100' $170.00
Chicken wire fencing 6'x150' $170.00
4x4 posts - $100
Latches, hinges, screws, nails, staples $100 apx
Treated lumber for doors $60
Automatic waterers $70

Hope this helps

Wow! My husband is in the middle of building me a chicken coop and it is awesome, but this is definitely much closer to the size I would have wanted. He seems to think that just a few birds should do. What is he thinking?!
