My friend has just purchased a young peacock from an auction, we dont have an exact age but it is estimated between 3 and 4 months old according to the breeder who sold him.

My question is how long does he need to be penned before he can be let out into the backyard to forage and know that he has to return to the pen at night? I know for adults it can be 6 months or longer, what about for younger ones?

I wanted to add that this chick has not had previous contact with people, he was raised totally free range by people who have a pair that breed on their farm.

3 month, now do you have any other birds .....if not he will roam till he finds some, even if other type of birds like chicken.

all way a risk of releasing a single bird

Thankyou Deerman,

Yes. He is in with a couple of bantams, who free range during the day and return to the pen at night, he was also told to clip his flight feathers which we have done.

My friend bought the bird to be a beautiful enhancement for his garden, hoping it will stay around without a female present...
