Thank you, I should have put her out if her misery last night, but I'm struggling with doing the act. I know it's part of chicken keeping and I will need to figure out what method I'm most comfortable with. Thank you for the kind words and all your help

I'm a coward... still can't do it myself, so don't feel bad.

When a chick get an infected umbilical cord, do you think this problem is from bad genes or environmental circumstance like a stressful hatch ect...?
 
No, i do not think it is genetics,more a case of stressful hatch or possibly umbilical cord had been pulled by another chick resulting in a tear. Did you notice if see hatched with it,possible umbilical hernia. Bottom line it unfortunately does happen,if caught immediately and cleaned to ensure no infection sets in,the odds are raised in her favour.
 
Thank you, I really would like to avoid this from happening again. I know chicks often don't make it, but I want to learn from my mistakes. If it was my error than lesson learned!
