3 dogs that love fried chickens!!

Chickmate, I respectfully disagree. I have seen bad dogs who were taught respect and trained be highly aggressive. And maybe I did misunderstand what you said, but it sounds like you would have felt sympathy for the dog that attacked my friend's grandchild when my personal belief is that I would sooner destroy all the dogs on the whole planet than watch that baby get mauled. Guess my priorities are different as I don't care how "good" a dog is, if it is aggressive to what is mine, it deserves what it gets and no amount of "what if it had been trained, they were BAD owners!" will make me feel sympathy for a dog that attacks a person or an animal of mine.

My last comment before I leave this thread: Dogs who are trained to be highly aggressive are owned by ignorant power hungry people who can't get respect in their own right so use their dog to try to get it. Yes, I feel a world of sympathy for those dogs as well as the dog who mauled your friend's grandchild. Unless there is a medical or neurologhical problem with a dog they only attack because the humans who control them have neglected to reinforce the fact that they are dominant and that the dog owes them, every member of their family and anyone they invite into their home complete respect. This is done with positive training and love. Dogs are directed what to do, what to eat, where to live and how to act by us humans. WE screw them up, so it is OUR fault if they misbehave or attack. You said " . . . I don't care how "good" a dog is if it is aggressive to what is mine." If the dog is aggressive to what belongs to its owner then it does not see the owner as the alpha pack leader and the owner has failed in creating a solid pack hierarchy. Again, dogs do not do things "just because", they do what they do for a reason and that reason, good or bad, was implanted in them by US. It is the human's fault, NOT the dog's. Do I feel sympathy for the family of the child? Of course I do! A world of sympathy. I'm a mother and grandmother, but that doesn't change the fact the the humans in this case neglected to teach the dog its boundaries and the dog paid the ultimate price for THEIR mistake. If they had properly taught the dog, the attack never would have happened. Back to the reason for this thread, if Treavor teaches his dogs that he is alpha and the chickens belong to him and are not to be touched, he will be able to have his dog and his chickens too.

My son's dog also has killed 2 of my chickens now when his dog is out my chickens are locked up. When my chickens are out the dog is locked in the house. He is still training her she is young (his dog) but some dogs will never be allowed around chickens unsupervised. I think that if he builds a soiled pen for his chickens and a fenced area for his dogs and keeps them away from each other then he can have both. I would also tell the OP to go to a basic obedience class to teach sit, lay down stay ect. I think it will help both the OP and the dog. Also labs need lots of exercise so I would make sure that you take her for a good walk or run before trying any kind of retraining with the chickens good luck to the OP

Labs are high energy dogs. They can't be left unattended for any amount of time ANYWHERE. If the OP wants both, chickens and dog, keeping them apart is the only answer. AND constant supervision of the dog. It's that simple and that hard.

Personally I have no use for dogs, in general. But I seem to be in the minority here, so keep them apart and that will solve the problem.

Yeah, yeah, I said I was leaving but I just have to give Treavor a big pat on the back for giving Lily one of the most important things she needs to become a better trained dog, EXERCISE! Do you do this every day Treavor, or only the days that you ride your dirt bike? She needs it EVERY day. When she is good and tired, has had a drink and a short rest is the best time to work with her on the chicken situation. You can do this Trev, but it will take lots of hard work. Are you up to it?

Again, chickmate I respectfully disagree. And I think you took my sentence wrong. I meant that I have seen dogs be highly trained AND still be highly aggressive. While I am not trying to detract from the issue at hand and debate with you, I just flat out feel that if dogs come onto my property and kill my chickens, I am legally allowed and will destroy the dogs. Yes, the OP COULD POSSIBLY change the behavior of the dog. I kind of doubt it at this point, but it COULD happen. But no offense to the OP, every single suggestion people have thrown out has been met with "I've done that already". If NOTHING that experienced people have suggested is working and this guy has tried it all, in my opinion his only recourse is to keep the dogs either chained or in a kennel or on leash at all times but even this is met with resistance. Unless he is willing to keep the dogs under containment while he is trying to "re-train" his dogs, he will not be able to keep chickens alive. It's a sad fact that while you think that all dogs are trainable and only bad owners make bad dogs, some dogs simply will never be safe around chickens. And if you believe you can train any dog to not kill chickens you should advertise as there are simply thousands of posts on the internet of people needing help because their dogs kill their chickens.

You're right BDG, I could make a ton of money if I had time to train them all!
