3 Legged Chick

my mom grew up on a farm. for show and tell she brought her 2 headed chicken to class. i will try to get the photo posted its an old black and white photo. she also had a pic of a 5 legged cow from a neighboring farm. it must be in the water.

What I would do:

Call McMurray, explain the situation, then ask them what could be done. I would try to get ALL of my money back since you don't know if the others are carrying the same genetic code. I don't think I would cull any of them, but I definitely would not breed them. I would definitely be freaked out if I got one with a deformity that was so obvious. That is a fully-formed third leg, for goodness sake!

The one that is all black is probably your surprise chick. McMurray sends a surprise mystery chick with your order.

I worked it out with McMurray a few months ago. The surprise chick looks to be a black sex link hen now that she has grown up.

i don't think its a genetic trait. if you were to breed that chick you would have normal chicks. it is no different than a conjoined twin with humans. some people are born with 3 arms/legs and when they have kids they don't make little 3 arm babies. it could have come from a double yolker too. i talked to my mom about her 2 headed chicken. it did not live very long but was able to give about 4 fertile eggs and they all came out normal. i had a cat until a year ago that had six feet (not legs) it just happens every now and then. heck i would pay extra for a 3 legged chick

I'm surprised McMurray's sent you that chick...they either knew it was sent and knew it would be okay or whoever packed up the chicks never noticed it. Will it be a larger breed? If its a full sized Standard breed I would think it would be able to hold its own.
