Hi my little 3 month old chick is unwell her legs are lame fine one day jumping about to next off her legs , one leg is worse than the other , both pointing forward, I’ve tried phoning the vet but they won’t see her because of bird flu going about . Sent them a video which they haven’t even bothered to get back to me yet. Don’t know what to do to help her , noticed since she’s been like this she was infested with lice which I’ve been treating , she’s eating and drinking ok , started giving her harkers coxoid I think that’s what it’s called for coccidiosis just incase when she first took unwell her poop was creamy and runny one day and the next looked like blood string in it but read this can be normal , now it seems to have went back to normal I think sometimes I’m not sure if there’s slight blood or not . also I’ve just started her on a vit b12 & b’s could only get a human grade so only put in one drop to her water , can’t get multi vet anywhere in the uk for chickens sold out , I’m feeding her good veg that can help with vitamins , and herbs also purchased some good health powder and pellets and a drink to help her , was going to purchase baby vitamins not sure if using human grade will be to high a strength or not , first little chick I’ve had so not sure what to do to help her all I have is the internet which comes up with lots of disease but how can you tell which one or if she has any or not , very stressed for the poor we soul don’t want to be putting her through any unnecessary pain . Any advice would be grateful , jackie

Hello! Can you get human b complex tablets and dose her with 1/2 tablet until she's well? Also human grade vitamin e oil 400 IU squirt the capsule into her beak.

Here's a couple of links that maybe of help ... I'm thinking CPT (riboflavin deficiency).

Are you feeding a commercial chicken feed?
What are you using to treat the lice? Check the others, they may have it also. Check their coop, and treat all. She should be separated from the others, they may trample her.

Coccidiosis - poor appetite, weak, runny poop sometimes blood. Corid 9.6%, Amprollium, Sulfa antibiotic, Toltrazuril, Esb3, EsbPlus, Baycox, Coximed, Sulfaprim ... You're in the UK so not sure what is used there

What do you feed including treats?
Was he vaccinated for Marek's?
Photos of the poop?

How long have you been treating with the Coxoid? IF You have finished treatment with the Coxoid, then start him on 1/4 Tablet human B-Complex daily to see if that helps. If he's still being treated for Coccidiosis, then omit any vitamins/supplements until you finish.

He has lice? You're treating those are they gone? They need to be gone. Permethrin based products work well, if you can't find Permethrin, then look for Pestene and treat him to get rid of the lice. Treat his housing too.

His symptoms and stance with his legs forward, I would also consider Marek's disease, but there's no real treatment except for supportive care.

If you have a vet that can run a fecal float to make sure he doesn't need deworming, that would be a good idea as well.

See that he's eating chick starter, drinking well and limit treats. Provide crushed granite to ensure that he processes his food well.

Hi thank you for your reply much appreciated, I’ve treated the lice with neem oil bathed her in it the lice fell of I’ve did this twice now and then put olive oil and Vaseline on her legs , when she was born I found her running about in coop took her and her mother hen out and put in a barn away from rest , now she’s in my garage with a heat lamp she’s on her own . Her we legs are trembling and she won’t put any weight on them I can feel she still have movement there though , I’m now since she s been unwell feeding her Vern-x keep well some poultry drink cooked vegetables ie broccoli pumpkin blueberries, along with a growing chicken feed from pets at home she started on the same stuff but the first feed one . Have given her the last two days harkers coxoid treatment for coccidiosis but only two small amount as not sure how much to give her with her being so young , this morning she had her mouth opened make small noises though she wasn’t going to make it , I’ve given her B complex liquid one drop maybe not enough as I put in the water , she seems to be eating and drinking ok but doesn’t have strength in her legs to stand . Thank you

Hi thank you for your reply much appreciated. not finished treatment for coccidiosis not even sure if I’m given enough as only putting two to three small drops in her we bowl of water the last two days , I had also started the vitamin B yesterday and this morning but will stop that if that shouldn’t be done while treatment of Coxoid? Her we legs where trembling this morning , she hasn’t been vaccinated for anything, I don’t know anything about hens there my partners he took them from a hen factory to safe them from kill. so we totally just have the internet as our vet isn’t helping much but I’m going to give them another phone . Not sure if she still have lice don’t see any, treated with neem oil she’s been bathed twice now in it , they just fell off . I’m really worried that it mareks didn’t even know about this disease or any disease of chickens if I’m honest, there not mine but I took over looking after the we chick and her mum . Thank you very much I’ve attached the first poop photos taken the runny one was the first one I seen it was everywhere that’s only a small on out that got on my clothes .

Do you have photos of the Mom too?

Are these Leghorns or Broilers?

Coxoid dosing is on the bottle, that's what you would follow. A couple of drops in the water is not going to treat Coccidiosis. Usually Coxoid is 3.84% Amprolium so the dose is 1oz. of Coxoid per 1 Gallon of water given for 7 days as the only source of drinking water. You would not give any extra supplements or vitamins that contain B1(Thiamine) during the course of treatment.

The poop doesn't look too bad, there's some intestinal shedding in there. Urates, especially the one all white, could indicate that she's dehydrated. See that she's drinking well.

At 3 months of age, provide Chick Starter (Mom can eat that too) so she's not getting a lot of calcium but she needs to the protein which is usually 18-20%.

Taken from an egg factory to prevent them from being slaughtered for food or because of? Usually an egg factory is going to raise birds until they go through first molt at around 18months, so it would be unusual for them to slaughter a 3 month old - it's not economical unless they had a reason to do a mass culling for something like disease.

The leg trembling is a concern. I'd provide her with 400IU Vitamin E daily. Once you finish the Coxoid, then add in 1/4 tablet B-Complex daily.

Do you have other chickens or just these 2?
