i have not gotten them yet but am looking forward to tomorrow! its 108 degrees out in Illinois right now! Our chickens are panting and refusing to come out of their coop!

but i dont blame them! Our poor horses are sweating and now being stalled during the day with a fan on them, due to the heat!
I hope our little ducklings we be ok! they have a big area with a home set up in our barn! i will have to put the pool in when they get here tomorrow! i have been wondering what to feed them as a treat besides their feed! they are only 1 week old so i dont want to feed them something that will harm them! can anyone tell me what i can give them!?
( i will post a picture tomorrow of them) Also, i have only posted a picture one time since i am new on here! i take the pictures on my iphone then email it to myself then save it but it is all blurry if i try and make it bigger! can anyone tell me how to make it better?? please!?

treat them like you would a baby.. after you have the baby you feed them the nutrition stuff they need, not treats right. same concept treat them like a baby while they are young and treat them when they build up their amune system enought to fight off any thing that can happen.. just my 2 cents

I looked at those same ducks on CL! I'm from Illinois too, but I'm cutting myself off this year at the 5 ducks I have, unless I come across a female chocolate runner or 2. Those babies are absolutely adorable

& I hope all goes well for you! When mine were a couple weeks old, I gave them little bits of lettuce as a treat and a tiny bit of mashed up green beans. They ate TONS of their healthy food too, so I wasn't too worried about an occasional treat. I usually gave them the treat when I let them splash in an inch of water in the bathtub. That way they made their mess and got cleaned up all at the same time.

oh really! cool! when i get mine im going to let them swim around in the bathtub and also we have a plastic pool out side! and your ducks sound georgeous! Also, i will have to try some lettuce and green beans! we already have spoiled chickens! they eat: bread, blueberrys, blackberrys, grapes, tomatoes, and oats!

Because they are only 1 week old, be cautious about putting them in the bath/pool. They only have down feathers and these absorb water not repel it like their true feathers will. This means that, once the down has absorbed the water, the duckling will tire very quickly because it is weighed down. In nature, mother duck would use her oil gland to preen her babies down feathers, so it wouldn't be such an issue.

If you insist on putting them in water, make sure it is shallow, warm and they can get out easily! They will get cold quickly too. What they *need* most at that age is drinking water, food and a heat lamp to keep warm under.

Good luck with your babies

yeah it said you can only put them in for about 20 min or so and to make sure the water is warm! so they will get to swim in the bathtub because i can make sure the water is warm and stuff, Since the water thing in our barn only comes out cold i will let that wait until they are a little bit older!

I AM SO EXCITED TODAY I GET MY DUCKLINGS!

i have to drive a hour and a half though, but its worth it!
btw were i at in illinois its been like 100 degrees out this week but today its supposed to cool down!!! to like 82! but do the ducks still need a heat lamp? i dont want to over heat them. we have a pin with shavings and a house built inside our barn! we will have a little fan on them cuz of the heat! what do you guys think i should do!?
