Well, my little guy hatched at 2 pm today and hes still in the bator pecking away at the dry membrain left on the inside of the shell. Im guessing he must be hungry and thirsty!!

He's about 8 hrs old with it's feather's being about 70% dry. When do i take him out and get him ready for the brooder???

EDIT: I now have 5 babies in my bator...its getting a little crowded. 3 of them are ready to go to the brooder...and 2 are "semi" wet still. With 2 other eggs pipping.

Will it hurt if i took the 3 out that are ready to go?? I just don't want to kill the others that are pipping.

Are there any other eggs in the bator or is he the only one? Once he is dry he can come out, but if there are other eggs in the process of hatching - leave him in. Chicks can easily go 24 (I've heard up to 48) hours. When you do take him out and put him in the brooder, dip his beak in water to get him going. Good luck!

I have chicks hatching today in my old rust bucket of an incubator. Because they are quail they are super tiny and one of my early hatchers got his head stuck between the wire floor and the wall

Hard to picture I know. So I had to get him out, he was struggling and was going to hurt himself but i could se the other eggs moving. I remembered what I saw on here, if you open it mist the eggs with hot water. That's what I did and they hatched just fine. I wouldn't do it unless you had to but we did have a good hatch.

i can post pic's of how dry it is to show you all if need be?? Im just trying to figure out if i should brooder him tonight or wait untill the morning??

It wont hurt to leave him in overnight, and hey...you may have another baby by morning!

I'd leave him...

i was leanin to doin that. Yo uhatch chicks in a bator before? Forgive me for asking but it looks like your a new'er member. I am as well, but i have learned alot.

Ive hatched about 50 chickens, 12 guinea, a few turkeys and 3 geese. I'm not that new, just dont post much...

I've left them in the incubator for 3 days before.

If you MUST take them out, for example if they keep rolling the other eggs, or start to look weak, wet a sponge or paper towel with hot water, and open the lid, throw in the sponge/towel quickly grab up only the dry babies and shut the bator. The less time you have it open, the better. Make sure your brooder is all set up, and warmed up before you add the chicks. You know how to brood them I'm sure..
