Sometime last year I realized I never did a formal introduction, but figured it was a little late to fill one out. Actually, when I first joined, I didn't even realize there was an intro page. But today, while looking through some old emails I realized it is 3 years today when I ordered my first chicks! So I thought, well it's 3 years to the day where I became an expectant chicken mom so why not do an introduction... here goes!
(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
I was when I got my chickens 3 years ago. Funny story.... when I decided I wanted chickens I didn't connect the dots that I am scared of birds. Haha... I got over that in about a day though. (only chickens though still scared of birds)
(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
10 girls. Started with 4 and with chicken math I now have 10.
(3) What breeds do you have?
Originally started with a barred rock, red sexlink, buff orpington and rhode island red.
Now I have (in order of pecking order) : red sexlink (Plum), buff orpington (Lemon), black orpinton (Mint), 3 Easter Eggers (Peach, Pumpkin, Chili), 4 mutts containing oliver egger, spintz, wyandotte (Peanut, Coffee, Cotton, Coco short for coconut)
(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens?
They are funny and have their own characteristics that make them stand out. Lots of people told me they were stupid but they are a lot smarter than I assumed. Well, sometimes they seem stupid ... like when I watch them drink dirty water instead of the nice, clean water I put out for them.
(5) What are some of your other hobbies?
Gardening
(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.
I talk a lot about my mom when I post but to be clear she lives WITH ME. LOL.
When I first got the chicks, I had 2 dogs but they have passed on now.
My mom spoils the chickens to death and will let me starve and but God forbid is the chickens don't get some veggies or snacks. I pay the bills so you would think I have some standing in the house ... but nope chickens first.
(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community?
I found BYC by chance. No one at work even cared about hearing my chick stories so I starting googling and found a whole new world!!! It has been wonderful! People actually did not roll their eyes when I would talk about chickens!!!
