32 Degrees and the girls wanted OUT...

It's about 10 F here today with 30 mph winds. This is the 1st day my girls have decided to spend most of the day inside! they did come out this morning when I opened their door but only long enough to clean up there treats and then back inside. I closed the door part way so they can get out if they want to but still block some of the wind.

I agree with most of the other posters - let your chickens decide if it's too cold for their tastes - at least give them access to outside if they choose. Sometimes, they don't mind the cold and it gives them room to run around and exercise, which keeps them warmer. I have 24 chickens and today it was only in the 20's with snow on the ground but those silly birds stayed outside most of the day - and a few I had to round up to go in when it was dark. If you pamper them too much they won't acclimate to the colder temps. I do, though, keep two 250-watt infrared heat lamps on at night to prevent frostbite.

My girls can go in/out as they choose.
They will spend time outside, walking in the snow, scratching in the snow, etc...then they will go in the coop for a bit, etc.

32°F would be balmy compared to our high today of 21. They went out a bit, but for the most part it was too cold for their little feet (they kept standing on one foot), they actually went in before sundown. It's supposed to warm up tomorrow, to the upper 30's.

The warmest it got today was about 23 degrees. This past weekend I did put a windbreak about 2 feet high around three side of their run. They don't like windy days.

I figure if I can be out in my Carhardts with the dog - loving it, then the chickens will love it, too. They are wearing the finest down apparel, they can handle the weather. Now, once it gets down to zero - forget it! I will stumble out, fill the water & feed and SLAM that door back shut.
Don't worry so much. It's not good for you...
