3rd Annual New Year's Day Hatch!!

The brown chicks develop better coloring (the color we are striving for.) The brown coming through is what we are trying to breed out of them. They should be Birchen with silver pencilling.

I had a weird dream last night that I hatched a one legged chick today. I was very confused because it had only been 4 days and i was trying to make it a prosthetic chicken leg... Ohh these pregnancy dreams.

Can I move in with you? It is still dark but it is obvious that we have frozen fog for the third day in a row.

Weird!! All of the Iowa Blues that hatched here are almost solid black!

Yeah, most of them are. They grow up to look like the ones in Story's book:

The ones born chocolate get a lot of lacing:

As you can see we have a long way to go to get a uniform flock

You're probably ok. How long was it down? I've had broodies off the nest for hours in winter. They got well below 93 I promise you. I think cooler is better than hot.

overnight. I'll be checking all day like a broody hen!

I did a quick candle on a few eggs last night and I couldn't determine anything definitive. I either have very shy eggs or a bunch o' bad ones.

I'm hoping for better results in a couple of days....
